Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen arrived in Beirut Sunday and was holding a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, a Lebanese official said. Roed-Larsen came to the besieged Lebanese capital as a member in a U.N. delegation dispatched by Annan to diffuse the crisis between Lebanon and Israel, now in its fifth day. The team is led by Vijay Nambiar, Annan's special political adviser and includes U.N. Mideast envoy Alvaro de Soto. They had been in a building housing a Lebanese military office and topped by a radio transmitter that was targeted in the attack, police said. An Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at the building, they said. An AFP correspondent at the scene said several families had been in the basement of the building after fleeing Israeli assaults in their nearby home villages. Pakistan denies territory used for terror acts on India ISLAMABAD, July 16, (AFP) - Pakistan on Sunday denied it was allowing terrorists to use its soil to organise attacks across the border in India. "Pakistan does not allow its territory for any terrorist activity," foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told AFP. She was responding to demands from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that Pakistan make a "firm commitment" to crack down on terrorists planning attacks across the border in India. The Prime Minister said this while talking to Mr. Fouad Siniora the Prime Minister of Lebanon on telephone this afternoon. The Prime Minister said that we appeal to the world community, the permanent members of the Security Council, the UN and other relevant bodies to intervene. He said that Pakistan strongly stands by the Lebanese people and fully respects their sovereignty and territorial integrity. The bomb exploded as the vehicle on patrol drove over it in the western province of Herat, the ministry's press office told AFP. "Six soldiers were killed and three others were wounded," it said. The attack came after Israeli war planes went into action over Lebanon again before dawn on the fifth day of an intensifying assault that has killed scores of people and left the country almost completely cut off from the outside world. Israeli tanks and armoured personnel carriers, backed by helicopters firing machine guns, moved in darkness into farmland near Beit Hanoun, an area often used by militants for launching rockets. Miltants blew up hidden bombs and fired anti-tank grenades. Three gunmen were killed in an Israeli air strike. At least 10 other Palestinians were wounded in that and other air attacks. The air force also targeted a Hamas office in the stronghold of Jabalya. Israeli offensive in Gaza has killed some 85 people, while at least 104 people have been killed in the Israeli assault on Lebanon. At the Linjiazhuang coal mine in Jinzhong city 64 miners were working underground. Six miners escaped and one was rescued early Sunday, it said. (Posted @ 09:00 PST) Scores dead as Israel steps up Lebanon blitz BEIRUT, July 16 (AFP) - Israeli aircraft pounded Beirut's southern suburbs early Sunday. Hezbollah claimed Sunday to have repelled the first attempted Israeli army incursion into southern Lebanon since the hostilities began. In an emotional televised address to the nation, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora called for an immediate ceasefire and the end to the "collective punishment" of his country. Arab League chief Amr Mussa declared the Middle East peace process "dead" after an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers. Foreign governments were drawing up plans for the evacuation of their nationals from Lebanon. On Saturday France, Italy and Sweden followed Britain's lead in preparing to evacuate their citizens, mainly by land to Syria or by ferry to Cyprus. France began deploying some 800 military personnel plus aircraft to Lebanon, chartered a ferry and dispatched two warships as part of its major operation to evacuate its own citizens and others. Turkey, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Switzerland, Ukraine and other nations managed to get some of their nationals out via buses and planes on Saturday.
