Benazir questions govt’s policies

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 8: Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto on Saturday questioned the privatisation of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation.

In a statement she said that bad governance was evident in its privatisation, which has led to power shutdowns and economic loss as well as hardship for the people of Karachi. In contrast, she claimed, the PPP gave good governance through transparent privatisation of the power projects.

The former prime minister pointed out that the most crucial mistake made by military dictatorship was that it lacked the wisdom to make the right policies that could benefit the people. For example, she said the PPP would never have privatised a key utility to a firm that lacked ten years experience of running power utility.

She said that the regime should have made as a prerequisite, at time of pre-qualification of bidders, that only power utilities or companies with at least 10 years of operating & maintaining (O&M) power plants were eligible for bidding.
