KARACHI: Water supply affected

KARACHI, June 27: Water supply to the city was badly affected on Tuesday following intermittent suspension of electricity supply to pumping stations due to the ongoing power crisis.

A spokesman for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board said all KWSB pumping stations were affected by frequent interruptions in electricity supply. As a result, the supply of water to citizens was affected.

He said power outages hit K-11 and K-111Pumping Stations of NEK Old Filter Plant on Monday from 11.02am to 2.28pm, from 3.25pm to 3.32pm, on Tuesday from 1.10am to 1.30am and from 6am to 6.07am.

The Gharo Filter Plant faced loadshedding on Monday from 11am to 12.10pm, from 12:25pm to 11pm and from 11.25pm to 10am on Tuesday. The spokesman said that on Tuesday, the Gharo Filter Station remained without electricity from 12.35am to 4.30am, while the K-11 and K-111 Pumping Stations at the NEK Old Filter Plant were affected by loadshedding from 10.50pm on Monday to 11.05am on Tuesday, 1.30am to 1.50am and from 2am to 2.10am.

The spokesman said that the Pipri Pumping Station faced loadshedding from 4.15am to 4.30am, 5.15am to 5.25am and 6am to 6.15am.

The Gharo Pumping Station was without electricity from 8am to 8.30am and from 9.35am to 11.20am. He said the power supply suspension had affected the water and sewerage system but the KWSB used generators to continue water supply. He appealed to the citizens to use water prudently.

The spokesman said that due to power suspension at 6am at Dhabeji a pipeline of 72-inch diameter supplying water to Karachi was burst and 22 million gallons less water was supplied to the city. He said the pipeline had been laid in 1958 and it burst

because of water pressure.
