GUJRANWALA, June 20: The assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) refused to work as supervisory police officers (SPO) at police station under new system and officers of the rank of DSP have been deployed in their place, it is learnt here on Tuesday.

Sources said the Punjab government introduced new system of police in five big cities — Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala — under which sub-divisional headquarters of urban areas were abolished and ASPSPs and DSPs were deployed as SPOs at police stations. But, almost all ASPs who were recruited in Grade-17 directly felt disgraced to work as SPO at police station and they reportedly refused to work at police stations.

They said senior police officers kept the matter in secret and deployed DSPs as SPOs and later transferred these ASPs to other sub-divisions.

They said mostly SHOs of police stations were also unhappy at the posting of DSPs as SPOs at police station and apprehended that the SPOs would interfere in their affairs. Now a tug of war could start between SHOs and SPOs, they added.

VISIT: DCO Manzer Hayat expressed his dissatisfaction over the cleanliness situation during his visit to various parts of the city here on Tuesday.

The DCO visited Gondlanwala Chowk, Deganwala Bazaar, Towner Chowk, Baghbanpura, Hafizabad Road and other areas and directed the Wasa authority to pump out dirty water from streets and bazaars immediately.

RECOVERY DRIVE: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) has accelerated its campaign of recovering outstanding dues from defaulters.

City division No1 XEN Syed Zulfikar Husain Shah said here on Tuesday that the Gepco had properties of some heavyweight defaulters sealed besides arresting some of them as well.

He appealed to defaulters to clear their outstanding dues by the end of June 30.
