SUKKUR, June 12: Hundreds of residents of katchi abadis along the right bank of the Indus River staged a demonstration at the City Point followed by a sit-in outside the press club here on Sunday to protest against eviction notices issued by the Sindh government.

Reports said that the residents of Allahabad, Aliabad, Mustafaabad, and other katchi abadis, led by Haji Kajal Din Khokhar and Noor Mohammad Mahar staged protest demonstration for two hours blocking traffic.

Later, they marched on the main roads of the city before reaching the press club where they observed a sit-in for half an hour.

The protesters told newsmen that they had been living on the right bank of Indus near Kirthar Canal, Dadu Canal and Rice Canal for 20 years, and now they had received notices from the government asking them to vacate their homes within 24 hours.

They said that the utility providers had given them electricity and gas connections but the government was still treating the localities as katchi abadies.

They demanded the Sindh chief minister and governor withdraw eviction notices and save their homes from bulldozing.

CONTRABAND SEIZED: The Shikarpur police intercepted a car coming from Karachi on the Indus Highway on Monday and seized 30kg good quality Charas and arrested two persons.

The police said Arbab and Bhooral Panhwar were coming from Karachi in the car No: 2186.

When they reached near Shikarpur, the police signalled them to stop, but the car driver sped up.

Later, an encounter took place and the police arrested the two accused, and seized the contraband and two TT pistols from them.
