Two Turkish army officers killed in PKK ambush TUNCELI, Turkey, June 11 (Reuters) - Two Turkish army officers were killed on Sunday in an ambush by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) guerrillas in eastern Turkey, a provincial governor said in a statement. India successfully test-fires nuclear-capable missile BHUBANESHWAR, India, June 11, 2006 (AFP) - India on Sunday successfully tested a nuclear-capable missile fired from a mobile launcher in the eastern coastal state of Orissa, a defence ministry official said. The test of the Prithvi-1 (Earth) missile took place at the Chandipur-on-Sea test site, said the official, who declined to be named. Gunmen kill four laborers in volatile southern Afghanistan KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) _ Gunmen killed four Afghan laborers working for an Indian road construction company as they were driving in the country's volatile south, officials said Sunday. Early morning violence leaves several dead in Iraq BAGHDAD, June 11 (AP) _ British soldiers responding to a fire in a vegetable market on Sunday wounded a 7-year-old boy and killed two others during early morning violence that left several people dead in Iraq, authorities said. Gunmen started the fire around 7 a.m. in south Amarah, 290 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, to lure in coalition forces, Police Capt. Hussein Karim said. Elsewhere in Iraq, a roadside bomb struck an Iraqi police car near a mosque in north Baghdad, killing one officer and wounding three others. Drive-by gunmen nearby fired on a civilian car in a separate incident, killing the driver. Police clash with protesters demanding government's resignation DHAKA, Bangladesh, June 11 (AP) _ Riot police fired tear gas at thousands of stone-throwing protesters in Dhaka Sunday, leaving dozens of people injured, witnesses and news reports said. The protesters were fired upon as they tried to block the entry points to Dhaka as part of a campaign to pressure Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to step down and to demand electoral reforms. Clashes were reported in at least five points across the city. At Kanchpur, police used tear gas and batons when about 3,000 opposition activists gathered on a highway leading to the capital, witnesses said. Three Guantanamo suicides were by hanging: military MIAMI, June 11 (AFP) - The three inmates who died at the Guantanamo prison camp hung themselves in their cells, camp commander said Saturday. The first victim was found by an "alert" prison guard who had noticed "something out of the ordinary" in the cell, said Rear Admiral Harry Harris. "When it was apparent that the detainee had hung himself, the guard force and medical teams reacted quickly to attempt to save the detainee's life," Harris said. Nepal parliament formally approves royal power curb KATHMANDU, June 11 (AFP) - Nepal's parliament in a unanimous vote has stripped King Gyanendra of his right to veto laws in a move that formally makes him a ceremonial monarch, an official notice said Sunday. Guantanamo lawyers demand hearings following suicides WASHINGTON, June 11 (AFP) - Lawyers representing inmates held at the US "war on terror" prison in Guantanamo Bay called on the government Saturday for immediate hearings and trials following the suicide of three prisoners. There are some 460 prisoners at the military-run prison but only 10 have been formally charged as terror suspects since the camp opened in February 2002. No detainee has gone on trial. "These deaths reflect the desperation for a basic human need -- a need for justice, a need to have someone hear what they have to say," Center for Constitutional Rights legal director William Goodman said. Nine wounded as three blasts rock Philippines LIPA, Philippines, June 11 (AFP) Nine people were wounded early Sunday as three near-simultaneous explosions rocked Manila and the city of Lipa on the eve of Philippine independence day, police said. All of the injured were hit by shrapnel as a bomb tore through an outdoor chicken market in Lipa, 75 kilometers south of Manila, police said. At about the same time a second bomb exploded at a police outpost in northern Manila and a third explosion was reported at a central Manila park near to a police station. No group has yet claimed responsibility and police would not say if they thought the attacks were related. Manila police chief Vidal Querol said security would be redoubled for Monday's activities, in which President Gloria Arroyo is expected to take part in a parade at a park near Manila Bay. Bush expresses "serious concern" after Guantanamo suicides WASHINGTON, June 11 (AFP) President George W. Bush expressed "serious concern" after learning that three "war on terror" detainees committed suicide at the Guantanamo prison camp, the White House said Saturday. Bush was briefed about the incident by US Secretary Condoleezza Rice and later had an intelligence briefing with national security adviser Stephen Hadley and White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, said Bush spokesman Tony Snow. Malaysian PM agrees to pay speeding, parking tickets: report KUALA LUMPUR, June 11(AFP) Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will pay off 11 tickets for illegal parking and speeding on Monday, apparently unaware that the summonses were outstanding, a report said. "I was just informed by (Deputy Inspector General of Police) Musa Hassan. I did not know about them," he was quoted as saying by the Sunday Star newspaper. “Thank you for letting me know.
