Taliban a "tactical threat" to Afghanistan: top US general NEW DELHI, June 5, 2006 (AFP) Washington's top general Monday warned the Taliban posed a threat to Afghanistan but said the US was determined to defeat the rebels. General Peter Pace, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the start of his three-day trip to New Delhi, urged nuclear rivals India and Pakistan to work together to fight the Taliban. "The Taliban is not a strategic threat that could unseat the government in Afghanistan but it is definitely a tactical threat which can create problems," Pace said after talks with Indian military leaders.(Posted @ 21:50 PST) Pakistan's inches closer to getting Full Dialogue Partner status of ASEAN ISLAMABAD, June 5 (APP): Pakistan and ASEAN Monday agreed to begin talks for Free Trade Agreement (FTA), giving a major boost to Islamabad's efforts for getting Full dialogue Partner status with the ten-member regional economic grouping. Jointly addressing a press conference at the conclusion of a meeting of the third ASEAN-Pakistan Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee, Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammad Khan and Secretary General ASEAN Ong Keng Yong termed the meeting an "important milestone". The meeting that focussed on eight areas; trade, investment, industry, environment, tourism, science and technology, drug control and human resources, emphasised on the need to further enhance cooperation in trade and economic ties. The Foreign Secretary said senior economic officials will discuss and complete a study by July next year for the FTA.(Posted @ 21:35 PST) Saddam trial adjourned until next week BAGHDAD, June 5, (APP/AFP) The trial of Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants on charges of crimes against humanity adjourned on Monday until next week after hearing only two defense witnesses. Witnesses testified on behalf of Ali Dayih Ali, a Baathist official during the time of the Dujail incident in which 148 people were executed. The trial will resume on June 12. 5 police killed, 4 missing after attack on checkpoint in southern Afghanistan KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) _ Five policemen were killed and four were missing after suspected militants attacked a vehicle checkpoint early Monday on a highway leading to southern Afghanistan's main city, a highway officer said. The 2 a.m. attack was on a checkpoint in Zabul province outside the city of Qalat on the main highway between Kabul, the capital, and the southern city of Kandahar, said a highway police official. He said five officers were killed, one was wounded and that four were missing. The official spoke only on condition of anonymity because he was concerned Interior Ministry officials did not want him to speak about it publicly. It was not immediately possible to confirm with local or provincial police chiefs because new officials were being assigned to the posts as part of a sweeping shake-up announced after last week's deadly riots in Kabul. An Interior Ministry official said he thought the attack on the police checkpoint had happened but that the ministry could not get in contact with police officials to confirm it. He also asked not to be identified, citing ministry policy because he was not the lead spokesman. Militants have stepped up attacks in recent months, particularly in Afghanistan's southern and eastern regions. In neighboring Uruzgan province on Monday, a firefight between suspected Taliban militants and police left two militants dead, said Allah Ullah Khan, a district police chief. The attack took place in the southern neighbhorhood of Dura. An Afghan army vehicle struck a roadside mine Sunday in southern Zabul province, killing one soldier and injuring about three others, a defence ministry spokesman said. A second soldier died later in hospital, another army officer said. A group of Taliban were also arrested. Elsewhere in the province Afghan troops on a joint mission with soldiers from the US-led coalition killed around five Taliban fighters and arrested three more on Sunday, the official added.(Posted @ 16:15 PST) Gunmen kidnap 50 Baghdad transport workers BAGHDAD, June 5 (Reuters) Gunmen in police uniforms abducted up to 50 employees of various Baghdad transport companies on Monday, police and Interior Ministry sources said. There were no details on the cause of the blast in Jebaliya. The Israeli army said it wasn't involved in the incident.(Posted @ 14:10 PST) Pakistani soldier killed in rocket attack in North Waziristan tribal region MIRAN SHAH, Pakistan (AP) Militants fired rockets at a roadside military post in northwestern Pakistan early Monday, killing one soldier and wounding another, an intelligence official said. Fifteen rockets were fired in the pre-dawn attack and one destroyed the post in North Waziristan tribal region, the official said. The other rockets landed nearby without causing any damage, he said. The attack killed one soldier and wounded another, he said. Workers digging on a site in Jilin province's Changchun city found six ditches with the skeletons laid out in an orderly fashion about 1.5 meters underground, the Beijing Morning Post reported. Little information has emerged about the origin of the skeletons but the report, citing local elderly residents, speculated it could have been a burial ground during the Japanese occupation in the 1930s and '40s. The raid on Sunday evening was at the Umma Studies Centre in the Manyal quarter of the capital. An Interior Ministry statement said the people arrested were attending "a secret organisational meeting of Brotherhood cadres". Police took publications, documents and computers from the centre, the statement added. The Brotherhood's said: "This escalation comes against the background of the widespread detentions among the Brotherhood by the security forces during the Egyptian uprising to support the judges in their position towards the government." Landslides killed seven people in neighbouring Guangdong's Meizhou city, with heavy rains destroying 784 homes and damaging 15,000 hectares of cropland.
