ISLAMABAD, May 22: The federal government on Monday decided to appoint former corps commander of Peshawar, Lt-Gen (retd) Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai, as governor of the NWFP, Minister of State for Information Tariq Azim told Dawn.

A notification to this effect would be issued on Tuesday, he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has assigned coordination and monitoring of the planning and implementation of all federal projects and activities in the NWFP to Political Affairs Minister

Amir Muqam.

Lt-Gen Orakzai is currently working with the federal government.

He was selected for the new job after NWFP Governor Khalilur Rehman tendered his resignation on Sunday.

A source said Mr Rehman is likely to be assigned some new responsibilities by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

The source said that while the new governor would deal with security issues and law and order situation, Mr Muqam would look into political affairs and development projects in the province.
