HYDERABAD, May 20: Sindh Abadgar Board president Abdul Majeed Nizamani has opposed the move to reintroduce the ration depot system in Sindh under the supervision of district nazims and DCOs.

He expressed surprise over the transfer of authority to UC nazims for issuing ration cards.

In a statement faxed to Dawn on Saturday, Mr Nizamani said that this was an age of free economy and free trade and why Sindh alone was being punished by reintroducing an outdated system.

He said that Sindh produced 1.04 million tons of sugar against its total requirement of 600,000 tons. He said that it was injustice that a line of ships carrying sugar from India was waiting to be unloaded at the Karachi port.

He said that while the shortage was being witnessed in other provinces, rationing was being introduced in Sindh.

Mr Nizamani said that now for ages there had been no concept of rationing except in the warring countries.

He said that the rationing system would further complicate the problem and increase the prices.

He said that it was a political blackmail and would start tug of war between the government, the sugar industry, farmers, dealers, retailers and consumers.

He said that the rationing would result in grabbing of commodities by powerful classes and leave negative effect on helpless consumers.
