UN "right forum" to address Iran nuclear program: White House official WASHINGTON, May 14, 2006 (AFP) - A top White House official said Sunday that the United Nations was the "right forum" to address Iran's nuclear program and shrugged off suggestions for direct talks between Washington and Tehran. National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley said Washington would prefer to continue backing European countries holding direct talks with Iran, while pursuing the issue through the UN Security Council. "We think the framework we have is even better (than direct talks)," Hadley said. Palestinian medics said four gunmen from the militant group were killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli soldiers in the town of Qabatiyeh, near Jenin. Two other civilians were killed in the raid, they said. Palestinian PM urges West not to bypass Hamas govt GAZA, May 14 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh called on Sunday on Middle East peace brokers to deal directly with the Hamas-led government, saying Palestinians cannot afford to wait weeks for a new aid mechanism that bypasses Hamas. "We will not surrender to the measures by the Quartet," said Haniyeh. "It is clear that these measures will take weeks and our Palestinian people will not be able to wait long to deal with this crisis," Haniyeh said. "We believe that the economic and political siege aims to force the Palestinian government to make political concessions." The onslaught against police stations and barracks began late Friday in apparent reprisal for the transfer of jailed gangsters to a high-security prison, officials said. Thirty people, 23 of them police officers, were killed in 55 attacks overnight Friday. Another wave of attacks left 22 more people dead including 12 more police officers. The assault in the southern Brazil state continued late Saturday and early Sunday with another 20 attacks, and police said there were new rebellions in prisons as well. The attacks were carried out by the "First Capital Command", Sao Paulo's largest criminal gang. Bandits kill 12 in southeast Iran: official TEHRAN, May 14, 2006 (AFP) - Armed bandits operating on a busy highway in Iran's restive southeast have killed 12 people and injured one other, official media reported Sunday. The official, identified as Shahzad Bugti, was kidnapped along with two guards on Saturday and his headless body was found on Sunday near the town of Dera Murad Jamali, region's administrator Abdul Samad Lasi told AFP. A note found with the bullet riddled body of Shahzad read that anyone opposing the rebel chieftain Nawab Akbar Bugti would meet the same fate, Lasi said.
