Passenger bus falls off bridge in Pakistani port city, killing seven, injuring 10 KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) _ A speeding bus carrying workers from a fish harbor fell off a road bridge in Pakistan's Arabian Sea port city of Karachi on Sunday, killing seven people and injuring 10 others, police said. The intercity public transport bus was headed to down town Karachi from the city's main fish harbor when it skidded off the bridge near the harbor, leaving six people dead at the scene, said Asif Razaq, a Karachi police official. A seventh man died of his injuries at a hospital. One of the 10 people injured in the accident was listed in serious condition. Razaq blamed speeding for the crash. Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan and many are blamed on widespread disregard for traffic rules. Public transport drivers are also not often properly trained and many work long hours in poor conditions. (Posted @ 10:44 PST)
Four killed, 18 hurt in southwest Pakistan blasts QUETTA, Pakistan, April 2, 2006 (AFP) - Two soldiers and two policemen were killed and 18 injured in separate bomb blasts Sunday in kohlu in Baluchistan province, officials said. Two paramilitary soldiers were killed and ten injured in two back-to-back bomb explosions at a farm in the town of Kohlu, 300 kilometres east of Quetta, a security official said AFP. The farm is owned and run by the paramilitary Frontier Corps. "Two soldiers were killed, while 10 were injured, two of them critically," the official said, requesting anonymity. Separately two tribal police guarding an oil and gas exploration site were killed and eight injured in a bomb explosion in the desert region of Sunny in remote Bolan district, said tribal police official major Mohammed Anjum. Paramilitary forces Sunday defused a remote-controlled bomb planted on a main railway line near Mach station a couple of hours before two passenger trains were to pass the spot, a paramilitary commander said.(Posted @ 18:40 PST)
Militants attack Pakistani military base, one soldier killed, four injured MIRAN SHAH, Pakistan, April 2(AP) Suspected militants attacked a military base in a tribal region in northwestern Pakistan, killing one soldier and injuring four others, an intelligence official said Sunday. Troops retaliated with artillery fire after the rocket attack Saturday night on their base in Dattakhel, a village in North Waziristan tribal region, which borders Afghanistan, the official said on condition of anonymity. Rabbani rejects privatization of Pakistan Steel Mills at throwaway price KARACHI, April 02, (PPI): Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, Deputy Secretary General Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sunday rejected privatization of Pakistan Steel (PS) at a throwaway price by the government. In a statement here he said that government's privatization policy was marked by lack of transparency. He said that deal was made in haste and much below the market price of the precious asset. He said that government must answer that the land admeasuring 4547 acres, which had been sold with the mill had a market value of Rs. 2 billion per acre, and in December 2004 when some of this land was given on lease it went at a higher price.(Posted @ 23:50 PST) Six including three women killed in road mishap near Abbottabad: Police ABBOTTABAD, Apr 2 (APP): At least six persons including three women were killed and seven others received serious wounds when a passenger bus fell into deep ravine at Saji Kot here Sunday, police said. The ill-fated bus No.7809-Karachi, having 25 persons on board, was going from Havalian to mountainous Toharyala-Miralan village fell into deep ravine while taking a sharp turn at Saji Kot here. As a result, three men and as many women died on the spot while at least seven critically injured were rushed to Ayub Medical Complex, Abbottabad. Police said the names of the injured and deceased were not identified as the relatives and locals of the areas rushed to the scene and took the dead bodies to their villages.(Posted @ 23:40 PST) Two US pilots, four troops killed in Iraq BAGHDAD, April 2, 2006 (AFP) - The US military on Sunday announced the deaths of six of its troops across Iraq, including two pilots of a helicopter that was shot down by insurgents the day before. Ten Iraqis were killed in violence Sunday, while insurgents blew up a Shiite mosque northeast of Baghdad as sectarian tensions festered in the country, still without a government nearly four months after a key national election. The US military said the two pilots of the helicopter that crashed Saturday evening after coming under enemy fire were presumed dead.(Posted @ 23:36 PST) Sri lankan President visits Quaid's mausoleum KARACHI, Apr 2 (APP): Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapakse, along with his wife visited the Quaid's mausoleum on Sunday evening after arriving here from Lahore. The distinguished guest laid a floral wreath and observed silence for a while in honour of Founder of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse also wrote his impressions in the visitors' book at the Mazar. He was welcomed at the Mazar by City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal. Earlier, the Sri Lankan President along with his wife was received by Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad Khan on his arrival at Karachi Airport from Lahore. According to Kashmir Media Service, the puppet Minister of Consumer affairs and public distribution, Mohammad Hakim Yasin on behalf of Revenue Minister in reply to a question in the so-called Legislative Council, said 3766 families have been affected and 14,939 kanals of land has been occupied by Indian para-military forces in border areas. The consignment, arranged by Cabinet Division was the first from Government of Pakistan to express solidarity and sympathy with those Iranian brothers and sisters who were affected due to this earthquake. The 12 tones of relief goods, dispatched today by C-130 comprising blankets, food items including rice and cooking oil. According to police, the wagon carrying 21 passengers was on its way to Jalalpur Pirwala from Multan. Near Chowk Naag Shah the wagon fell into a canal due to detachment of a wheel. "The two soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb at approximately 9 pm (1700 GMT) on April 1 in central Baghdad," the military said. Earlier Sunday the military said two other troops had died, a soldier near the oil-rich city of Kirkuk and a marine in the restive western province of Al Anbar. The marine, assigned to the second brigade combat team stationed in Anbar province's turbulent capital, died from wounds sustained during combat on Friday. The soldier, from the 101st Airborne Division, died from "non-battle related injuries" received in the course of an operation near Kirkuk on Thursday. The latest casualties bring the toll of US servicemen killed in Iraq since the 2003 invasion to 2,333 according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures. Iranian authorities were rushing temporary shelter to some 21,000 families which were homeless in 330 villages that were damaged or flatted by the series of quakes. Interior Ministry spokesman Mojtaba Mirabdollahi said late Saturday that ``all the survivors have received adequate protection and operations providing temporary accommodation is now over.''
