Strike in Britain hits commuters, public services LONDON, March 28 (AFP) - More than one million local authority staff in Britain went on strike Tuesday in a pensions dispute that closed schools and caused travel chaos in what unions said was the biggest walkout in 80 years. Waving banners and chanting their grievances, council workers set up picket lines outside council offices, police stations, universities, schools, libraries and museums across the country as part of the one-day stoppage. Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, the biggest union involved, said the unions are protesting at plans by Tony Blair's government to scrap a rule allowing council staff to retire at 60 if their age and length of service add up to 85 years. Prentis said the government had reached a deal last year with millions of civil servants, teachers and health workers allowing them to retire at 60. "All we are asking for is the same kind of protection for council workers," he said. Unison said more than a million workers had supported the walkout, making it the biggest of its kind since Britain's landmark General Strike in 1926. The strike badly affected tens of thousands of commuters in the north of the country, with the closure of a ferry crossing the Mersey river in Liverpool as well as a rail system in Tyneside. In Northern Ireland, all bus and rail services were at a standstill.(Posted @ 19:42 PST)

Pakistan seeks U.S. market access to fight extremism ISLAMABAD, March 28 (Reuters) - What Pakistan really needs to fight extremism is better access to U.S. markets in order to create jobs, Pakistan's Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan said ahead of the opening of “Expo-2006” in Karachi on Wednesday. While grateful for aid and arms supplies from the West, he voiced frustration with trade policies that left countries such as Pakistan disadvantaged, while they were being urged to do more to combat Islamist militancy resulting from economic deprivations.
