LAHORE, Feb 12: Bay colt Zoro put up splendid show when he came in from behind to win the feature event run over 1200m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

He beat Stereo Nation by a distance while Pawan completed the frame among seven starters left after the withdrawal of Millennium Count from the race.

Bay mare Pawan finished third, another two lengths behind while Storm Warning completed the frame.

Zoro defied top weight of 9-5 in the handicap clocking one minute 13 seconds on the grass track.

Trained by jockey-turned-trainer, Memraiz Khan, the winner was ridden by A. Imran in this eighth and last race.

In the supporting and seventh race, the red-roan filly Key Guy Doll, caused a sensation when she produced a blistering turn of foot to win the event run over 1200m.

She beat Putra’s Lady by over two lengths with Ghazi Rifle and Miss Photogenic completing the frame. Earlier the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards withdrew favourite colt Sher-i-Gujrat from the race on the report of LRC veterinary officer.

The best performance of the day came from bay filly, Valentine, who outclassed her six rivals winning the sixth race by nine lengths comfortably from Lucky Coin.

The filly won despite going wide in the straight on almost the outer fence of the Racecourse.

Owned by Fawad Ahmad Cheema the filly is trained by Aleem-ud-Din.

Riding boy A. Imran excelled among the riders when he brought in a brace of winners through Valentine and Zoro in the sixth and eighth race of the day’s card.

Trainer Mohammad Hanif had the distinction of saddling two winners in Mera Chandiwala and Key Guy Doll in the third and seventh race.

The punishment awarded to two riders, Pervaiz Bhatty and Aamar Parvaiz after races on Sunday last, had a salutary effect on the other riders, who were seen in action while riding their mounts on merit. As a result keen contests were the order of the day.

Over a dozen owners hailed the decision and demanded similar severe actions against the riders caught for not riding out their mounts on merit.

This, they added, would generate more public interest and make the competitions stiffer and enjoyable.
