Senate confirms Bush nominee Alito to US Supreme Court WASHINGTON, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - The US Senate on Tuesday confirmed conservative judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, handing President George W. Bush a major victory in his bid to steer the US high court to the right. The largely party-line vote was 58 to 42. Eminent historian Alastair Lamb calls on President ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Eminent historian, Professor Alastair Lamb called on President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday and lauded his initiatives to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Mr. Lamb is the author of several books on Kashmir including "Kashmir: A Disputed Legacy". During the meeting, Professor Lamb lauded the President's courageous initiatives as the best way leading to a resolution of the Kashmir dispute. Gang of railway track busters arrested ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): A gang of railway track busters believed to be involved in the Domeli train accident has been arrested by Gujrat police, District Police Officer Raja Munawar Hussain said Tuesday. On a tip off four accused Abdul Ghafoor, Muhammad Imran, Shahid, Mehboob have been arrested while their three companions managed to escape, he told PTV. About 15 to 20 feet long 60 pieces of railway line, hammer, nut opening key set, three big and two small gas sylanders have been recovered from them, the DPO said. The accused have confessed that the track pieces were stolen from railway line near Gujar Khan. "The accused could be involved in the Domeli train accident," he said. Police find bodies of 11 young men in Iraq BAGHDAD, Jan 31 (Reuters) - A British soldier was killed by an explosion in the southern Iraqi port town of Umm Qasr. Britain's Ministry of Defence said three other soldiers were wounded, one seriously, in the blast. Police found the bodies of 11 young men in the back of a parked truck in western Baghdad. The bodies were found blindfolded and each had a gunshot wound to the head. Four Iraqi soldiers were killed and another wounded after they clashed with insurgents in Tarfiya, a small town 30km north of Baghdad, an army official said. It was not immediately clear if there were any insurgent casualties. Three Iraqis were shot and their bodies dumped near a road in Rustamiya on the outskirts of the capital. Afghans win aid, military pledges at conference LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Afghanistan received promises of economic and military support from Western nations at a conference in London on Tuesday in return for pledges to fight corruption and the illegal opium trade. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said President George W. Bush would seek approval for an extra $1.1 billion of aid for the Afghan people in the next year -- on top of annual U.S. aid to the country of nearly $6 billion -- and British Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged 500 million pounds ($885 million) over the next three years. Avalanche kills 15 villagers in northern Afghanistan KABUL, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - At least 15 people were killed when an avalanche tore down a mountain in snowbound northern Afghanistan, destroying several homes in about five villages, a provincial governor said Tuesday. The avalanche struck a northern district of Badakhshan province late Monday, governor Munshi Abdul Majeed said. "Up to now they have found 15 bodies," he said. "It has been snowing for seven days in Badakhshan. Roads to 30 villages have been blocked," he said. Woman kills six in California shooting rampage LOS ANGELES, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - A woman went on a shooting rampage in a US mail processing plant where she used to work, killing six people and critically wounding another before committing suicide, police said Tuesday. The bloody shooting spree erupted late Monday in the Californian coastal town of Goleta, near Santa Barbara, about 160 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles. Police found two bodies in front of the building and four others inside. NATO ends quake relief operations in Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - NATO Tuesday announced the end of its 90-day relief operation in quake-ravaged regions of northwest Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, saying its troops had successfully completed their mission. Some of the 1,000-strong NATO contingent have already left while the remainder will leave in coming days. During the initial critical phase NATO provided the largest single contribution to the air bridge, flying 3,435 tons of relief goods and food items in 168 flights. Blair says major powers united on Iran LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Major powers are now united in their response to Iran's nuclear programme and getting a report on Tehran's activities to the U.N. Security Council is a major step, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Tuesday. "I hope it's sending a message that the international community is united," Blair told Reuters Television. "This is going to be discussed and decided upon by the U.N. Security Council. That is a very important step. We couldn't get agreement on that before, we've got agreement on it now." The U.N. Security Council's five permanent members agreed on Tuesday that the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog should report to the Council on what Iran must do to cooperate with the agency. PPAF launches $ 100m rehabilitation and reconstruction project ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund(PPAF) Tuesday launched the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project for earthquake affected areas with a funding of US $ 100 million from World Bank. Chairman Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority(ERRA) Lt Gen Muhammad Zubair who was the chief guest, speaking on the occasion said housing was the first priority of the government followed by restoration of health and education infrastructure. PPAF Chief Executive Kamal Hayat said the plan envisaged complete reconstruction of 250 villages in 34 union councils of AJK and NWFP. It involved 24,000 low cost seismology appropriate housing units along with 200 community buildings, rehabilitation of 12,000 infrastructure schemes and training of 16,000 individuals from partner organisations and communities in various skills and trades while equipping partner organisations with 250 professionals. Pakistan-India agree to establish second rail link ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Pakistan and India Tuesday agreed to establish a second rail link via Zero Point Railway Station near Khokhrapar on the Pakistan side and Munabao in India on their international border. The two countries already have a rail link through Wagah in Punjab province. The new train - The Thar Express would operate every Saturday.Frequency would be enhanced depending on the number of passengers, a Joint statement issued at the end of the two-day talks said. According to the agreement Pakistan will operate its train for the first six months, followed by India, for a similar period. The train would leave Karachi at night reaching Khokhrapar at around 0900 hrs. It would leave for Munabaoat 1100 hrs and would return after 1300 hrs, the same day. Three killed in Taliban clash with villagers in southern Afghanistan SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - Two Taliban insurgents and a bystander were killed in a rare clash between the militants and angry villagers in southern Afghanistan, police said Tuesday. Trouble began when about 10 members of the fundamentalist militia set up a checkpoint in the village of Loi Karez near the town of Spin Boldak on Monday. They searched travellers and destroyed cassette players in their vehicles, said local police chief Abdul Wasey Alkozai. The group, led by a Taliban commander called Mullah Samad, also seized mobile phones and snatched some cash from at least one person, he added. Later they went to a villager's house and demanded food. While they were eating, a local tribal chief with some armed villagers attacked and disarmed them, Alkozai said. Two militants were killed in the shootout and villagers captured two wounded Taliban, he said. However, a fleeing militant hurled a grenade at villagers gathered outside the house. Sudan boycotts Danish products, officials over cartoons KHARTOUM, Jan 31, 2006 (AFP) - Sudan has turned down a visit by Denmark's defence minister and urged all firms to boycott Danish products over the publication of blasphemous cartoons, official news agency SUNA reported Tuesday. "Sudan's position is based on its rejection of blasphemy against Islam and any other heavenly faiths," Defence Minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein said confirming the Danish defence minister’s scheduled visit. Permanent five say IAEA must report Iran to U.N. LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) The permanent five members of the U.N. Security Council agreed on Tuesday that this week's meeting of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog should report Iran to the Council over its nuclear programmes, said a statement from the five. This was declared in a joint statement after the meeting between the foreign ministers of China, Russia, the United States, France and Britain as well as Germany and the European Union's foreign policy chief. The statement said the ministers agreed that the U.N. Security Council should await the IAEA director general's report to a March IAEA meeting before deciding what further action to take. "(The ministers) call on Iran to restore in full the suspension of (uranium) enrichment-related activity, including research and development under the supervision of the IAEA," the statement added.
