Mukhtaran Mai’s visit to UN deferred

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS Jan 20: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s visit to the United Nations was undermined by the controversy over Mukhtaran Mai’s visit to the United Nations which was canceled on the request of Pakistani government, UN officials said. The Pakistani government, according to the officials, sought a postponement of Mai’s event to a later date so there is no conflict with the prime minister’s visit.

Ms Mai was scheduled to attend screening of a film on her struggle to secure justice for the abused women of Pakistan.

She was not scheduled to speak. The event was planned much before Mr Aziz’s visit to the United Nations.
