By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Dec 31: The newly-elected naib nazims of city district/zila, town/tehsil/taluka councils in all the four provinces will take the oath of office on Jan 3. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has announced schedule for the oath on Jan 3, Election Commission Secretary Kanwar Mohammad Dilshad said here on Saturday.

On Dec 28, the councillors had elected from among themselves naib nazims of districts, tehsils and town councils.

SENATE DRAW: In a separate announcement, the acting CEC said proceedings for drawing of lots to determine the term of office of Senators will be held in the Committee Room No:2 of the Parliament House on Monday at 10am.

The draw of the lots will be conducted by the acting CEC in two groups (First group three years term and second group six years term) under Article 59 (3) of the Constitution. Half of the members of the 100-seat Senate will retire after completion of three-year terms of their offices before March 13, 2006 as a result of the ballots.

Out of 50, 33 ballots will be drawn from the general seats (seven each from the Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan while four from Fata and one from the federal capital), nine for the reserved seats for Ulema/Technocrats (two each from the four provinces and one from the federal capital) and eight seats from the category of women (two each from the four provinces).

Balloting procedure will be held in the presence of senators or their authorized representatives in which identical slips containing names of the senators printed in English and identical slips containing the words “first group three-year term” and words “second group six-year term” will be used. Two transparent jars or baskets will be used, one for carrying slips with names of senators and the other containing slips of term of office, i.e. three years or six years.
