KARACHI: Interaction between BD, Pakistan MPs urged

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 26: Increased interaction between the parliamentarians from Pakistan and Bangladesh was stressed for addressing the issues confronting the people of the two countries and of the region.

This was reiterated by the two sides at a luncheon hosted by the Sindh Assembly Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah for the visiting 19-member parliamentary delegation of Bangladesh on Monday.

Welcoming the guests, Mr Shah talked about the “excellent” relations between the two countries and thanked them for their country’s support and the expression of solidarity in the aftermath of the Oct 8 earthquake.

He called for an increased interaction among the parliamentarians for ensuring socio-economic development of the people and evolving a strategy for meeting the natural disasters not only in the Saarc region but also beyond that.

Speaker Sindh Assembly said that both Pakistan and Bangladesh shared the commonality of views on this issue.

He said that Pakistan was engaged in the fight against terrorism through which Bangladesh was also passing through.

Mr Shah said that Pakistan was looking forward to the visit of the Bangladesh Prime Minister Mrs Khalida Zia soon, which would act as a catalyst to further improve the relations between the two countries.

The leader of the visiting delegation and adviser to the Bangladesh’s premier, Mr Salahuddin Qadir Chaudhri, was encouraged by the presence of the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly and the bipartisan effort in appreciating the level of relationship.

Referring to the “shared memories” of Pakistan and Bangladesh in the days gone by, Mr Chaudhri also referred to the scourge of terrorism and a phenomenon that had transcended national boundaries. He called for concerted efforts for addressing the issue.

On the occasion, the Speaker of the Sindh Assembly presented the traditional Sindhi Ajrak to the guests from Bangladesh. The deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh was also present.
