Asim, Shahzad, Jalil in semis

KARACHI, Dec 20: Davis Cuppers Shahzad Khan and Jalil Khan fought a grim battle against their opponents before marching into the last four of the KC Yaqoob Admaney memorial tennis tournament at the Karachi Club courts on Tuesday.

While Shahzad struggled to overcome fighting Nomi Qamar 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), Jalil was stretched to limits by veteran Rashid Malik before emerging 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victorious.

Joining the above two in the pre-final was Asim Shafiq who faced no resistance in beating Muhammad Shafiq straight 6-2, 6-0.

The women’s singles has also reached the semifinal stage after Nida Wasim and Sara Mahboob won their quarterfinals in contrasting styles.

Nida conceded just two points in registering a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Sahr Khawaja while Sara Mahboob after dropping the opener 4-6, struggled to beat Sara Mansoor 6-4, 7-5 in the following two singles.

Upcoming Yasir Khan, Umer Babar and Khurram Nazir were through to the Juniors’ under-17 singles semifinals.

Men’s singles (quarterfinals): Asim Shafiq bt Muhammad Shafiq 6-2, 6-0, Shahzad Khan bt Nomi Qamar 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), Jalil Khan bt Rashid Malik 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Women’s singles (quarterfinals): Sara Mahboob bt Sara Mansoor 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, Nida Wasim bt Sahr Khawaja 6-0, 6-2.

Junior’s (Under-17) (quarterfinals): Yasir Khan bt Nomanul Haq 6-1, 6-1, Umer Babar bt Saad Amir 6-2, 6-3, KHurram Nazir bt Usman Ejaz 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 6-2.

Boys (Under-15) singles (quarterfinals): Nasir Mushtaq bt Fahad Muhammad 6-0, 6-1, Omer Shahid bt Ahsan Bajwa 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 7-6, Ijaz Khan bt Zainul Abedin 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, Vicky Kumar bt Hassan Azad 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, Farhan Hussain w/o Aamir Dervesh, Abdul Rehman bt Mustafa Zaidi 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, Heera Ashiq bt Sunny William 6-2, 6-2, Zuhair Raza bt Dinesh 6-1, 6-0.
