Indian Kashmiris allege rights violations on world rights day SRINAGAR, occupied Kashmir, Dec 10 (AFP) - Separatists in occupied Kashmir accused India's army of violating human rights and appealed for UN intervention as they staged protest marches Saturday to mark International Human Rights Day. Police broke up a march by activists of the main separatist alliance, Hurriyat, in Srinagar and detained four separatists. But another group of protesters presented a petition to the small United Nations office in Srinagar that monitors the ceasefire along the Line of Control which separates the Indian and Pakistani zones of Kashmir. The protesters were led by a senior Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah who spent over 20 years in Indian jails and who heads Kashmirs anti-violence Democratic Freedom Party. The petition addressed to UN chief Kofi Annan alleged that rights violations were continuing in occupied Kashmir despite a peace process between India and Pakistan. "There is no let-up in human rights violations (by Indian troops) even as a constructive peace process is going on," read the two-page memorandum. "We continue to be killed and oppressed. "On behalf of nearly 13 million people on both sides of the Line of Control, I passionately appeal to your kind self to respond to the boiling Kashmir situation," the document said. "We believe demilitarising the region would help find the long elusive Kashmir solution. Let this credible world body reach out to the oppressed people of Jammu and Kashmir," it added. New Delhi has barred Amnesty and other leading international human rights groups from visiting occupied Kashmir to check on the situation.(Posted @ 18:48 PST)

Britain admits it knew 1950s nuclear ingredient was Israel-bound LONDON, Dec 10 (AFP) Britain admitted Friday that it knew that heavy water it sold in the 1950s, a key ingredient in making nuclear weapons, was bound for Israel, amid claims of a cover-up. An investigation by BBC television's "Newsnight" programme unearthed papers showing a deal was done to export heavy water. The probe showed that "Britain knew that the heavy water was going to Israel and that the Israelis were likely to use it to make nuclear weapons," alleged BBC reporter Michael Crick. A Foreign Office spokesman, while maintaining that it was purely a deal between Britain and Norway, admitted Britain knew the heavy water's final destination. "We were aware at the time that Norway planned to sell the heavy water to the Israeli Atomic Energy organisation," the spokesman told BBC. The confidential documents also apparently show that the Foreign Office knew Israel was secretly trying to buy uranium from South Africa. Jeremy Corbyn, a left-wing MP from Prime Minister Tony Blair's governing Labour Party, has called for a parliamentary committee to investigate.(Posted @ 10:05 PST)
