Poland was main CIA European detention base: Human Rights Watch WARSAW, Dec 9 (Reuters) Poland was the heart of the CIA's secret detention network in Europe, with bases there until recently holding a quarter of the 100 detainees estimated held in such camps worldwide, a human rights group said. Russia starts building new gas pipeline to Germany BABAYEVO, Russia, Dec 9 (Reuters) Russian gas giant Gazprom officially started work on a new Baltic Sea pipeline on Friday to supply Siberian gas direct to Germany and reduce dependence on transit through ex-Soviet neighbours. Japan pledges 10 billion dollars for world's poor ahead of WTO talks TOKYO, Dec 9 (AFP) Japan said Friday it will put up 10 billion dollars over three years to promote trade with poor countries, calling it a commitment to economic development ahead of global free-trade talks. "Japan would like to cooperate with developing countries for the success of the Hong Kong meeting," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said in a meeting with ambassadors of 39 least-developed countries or LDCs. The aid package was expected to include low-interest loans, grants and technical assistance. Four Turkish soldiers killed in Kurd rebel clash DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Dec 9 (Reuters) Kurdish rebels killed four Turkish soldiers in a clash overnight in a mountainous area on the Iraqi border, security officials said on Friday. F-16 warplanes took off from the main southeastern city of Diyarbakir and bombed the Gabbar mountain area in Sirnak province where the clash began on Thursday evening, they said. Two beheaded in Miranshah ISLAMABAD, Dec 9 (Reuters) Militants beheaded two suspected bandits and strung up their bodies on electricity poles in Miranshah, North Waziristan's main town, witnesses said on Friday. "Both were beheaded. One beheaded body was hanging upside down," a resident of the town said who declined to be identified out of fear for his safety. Ecosystem changes a threat to human health: WHO BANGKOK, Dec 9 (Reuters) The rise of deadly new diseases such as SARS and bird flu could be linked to the destruction of the environment, the World Health Organisation said on Friday. Suspect claims he was coerced into linking Iraq with Al-Qaeda: report WASHINGTON, Dec 9 (AFP) A top Al-Qaeda suspect whose testimony was used in part to justify the US-led war on Iraq said his statements linking Iraq to Al-Qaeda were false and made under coercion in Egypt, The New York Times said Friday quoting current and former US officials. This was the first time US officials admitted he had lied about the Iraq-Qaeda links to obtain better treatment from his captors, the daily said. It was also the first public evidence that bad intelligence on Iraq may have been in part the result of the US policy of rendition, by which suspects were sent abroad for interrogation to skirt strict US rules against prisoner abuse, the daily added. Israel shuts Jerusalem-West Bank crossing after stabbing JERUSALEM, Dec 9 (Reuters) Israel has temporarily closed the main crossing point between Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, the army said on Friday. President discusses follow up of extraordinary summit with several leaders ISLAMABAD, Dec 9 (APP): President General Pervez Musharraf discussed steps needed for revamping the OIC during bilateral meetings with several leaders on the margins of extraordinary summit in Makkah, senior officials accompanying the Pakistani leader said on Friday. On the second day of the summit, the President exchanged views with leaders of Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Malaysia, Jordan, Algeria.Bosnia, Mauritania and Guinea, the ways and means for implementing proposals aimed at imparting a new dynamism to the 35-year old organization. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the Pakistani leader discussed follow up of the Makkah extraordinary summit, especially focusing on how to restructure and strengthen the Organization of Islamic Conference. The Egyptian President appreciated the ideas and proposals unfolded by President Musharraf, particularly those related to providing funds and resources to the OIC. The Algerian Prime Minister and President Musharraf conversed on the need for a new charter and a new name for the OIC. They recalled that the organization was born under specific circumstances and now it was required to address new challenges. They also exchanged views on how to implement the decisions of the organization. Storms bring snow, freezing cold to middle of U.S.; at least 10 people killed NEW YORK Dec 09 (APP/AP): Storms across the United States' midsection delivered freezing cold and as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow, bedeviling drivers on slippery roads and closing schools from Texas to Indiana. At least 10 people were killed in road wrecks in Kansas, Missouri and Kentucky over two days. Airliner skids off Chicago runway and slams into cars killing a boy CHICAGO, Dec 9 (APP/AFP) - A Southwest Airlines passenger jet skidded off the runway at Chicago's Midway airport during a heavy snowstorm late Thursday, hitting two cars and killing a six-year old boy, US aviation authorities said. Another eleven people were injured, but all 90 passengers and eight crew members of the Boeing 757 from Baltimore, Maryland, were evacuated safely, a spokesman said. Afghan policeman killed in suspected Taliban ambush KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Dec 9 (AFP) - Suspected Taliban rebels ambushed a police patrol in southern Afghanistan, killing one policemen and injuring two others, an official said Friday. Dozens of militants attacked the vehicle which was on a routine operation in insurgency-hit Helmand province on Thursday, Mohammad Wali, a spokesman for the provincial governor said. "There was big fighting. One of our policemen was killed and two of them were injured," Wali said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident and said the police casualties were higher. Two Taliban fighters were also injured, Yousuf Ahmadi, who says he is one the spokesmen for the militia, said on telephone. "We ambushed their vehicle in Baghnai district of Helmand on Thursday.
