Seven Pakistani quake survivors killed by tent blaze ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (AFP) Seven earthquake survivors including four children died from severe burns after their tent was set ablaze by a candle in northern Pakistan, police said Wednesday. The victims of the fire on Tuesday in the village of Banser, some 100 kilometres north of Islamabad, were all from the same family, a police officer said. Four of them died instantly and the other three succumbed to their injuries at a German field hospital Wednesday morning, the official said. The dead included four children, two women and a man.(Posted @ 15:12 PST) UN ready to feed Pakistani quake survivors through winter ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (AFP) - The United Nations said Wednesday it was ready to feed 1.3 million Pakistani earthquake survivors through the winter, but called for more money to maintain helicopter airlifts needed to reach remote areas. The WFP is leading efforts to provide emergency food to 400,000 people who can only be reached by air, double the previous target figure of 200,000, the UN said in a statement. In addition to those only reachable by air, the WFP has also accepted responsibility for 600,000 people who can be reached by land -- including 250,000 living in camps -- as well as 150,000 children in tented schools. Another 150,000 children under five and nursing and pregnant mothers who will receive WFP food aid. The UN said that airlifting food supplies to the survivors in mountain villages in Azad Kashmir was the "most challenging logistical operations the agency has ever faced."(Posted @ 13:45 PST) 29 wagons carrying relief items from Iran enroute to Rawalpindi NOSHKI Dec 7 (APP) Twentynine wagons carrying relief goods for quake victims from Iranian Red Crescent are on their way from Taftan border to Rawalpindi. These include weather-proof tents, blankets, food stuff and miscellaneous items. A meeting presided over by Chief Secretary Salman Siddique was informed that the teams would be headed by Deputy Directors and would collect necessary information and the data would be computerized and made available to the people, willing to support a family under this programme. (Posted @ 09:45 PST) 450 tents, 4,000 blankets provided to quake-hit districts ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (APP): The NWFP government has provided another 450 tents, 4,000 blankets and 50 generators to authorities of quake-hit districts to minimize the sufferings of the victims, provincial Health Minister, Inayatullah told a private TV channel. He said a number of local and international donors have pledged for reconstruction of hospitals in the affected areas and the government has also finalised priorities in this regard. Underlining the need for improving coordination and maintaining momentum in relief activities, the minister has ordered fortnightly meetings of of the Coordination Committee on regular basis. (Posted @ 09:35 PST) Kashmiri volunteers playing lead role in reconstruction phase: Anwar ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (APP) : President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir Sardar Mohammad Anwar Khan has said that a total of 490 volunteers from Muzaffarabad, 400 from Ponch and 350 volunteers from Bagh have initiated the reconstruction process under the banner of National Volunteer Movement (NVM). Talking to Mohammad Ali Durrani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Tuesday he said the volunteers from AJK are performing well, as being locals they knew the affected areas better than others.
