President, PM call for awareness regarding eye diseases LARKANA, Dec 4 (APP): President General Pervez Musharraf in his message to First International Chandka Ophthalmology symposium said such symposia are the need of the day, which would be helpful in creating awareness regarding prevention and treatment of Ophthalmia disease. He called upon ophthalmologists to renew their commitment to serve ailing humanity with honesty, utmost care and competence. The President was confident that ophthalmologists would uphold the dignity and honour of the profession and that of their Alma Mater by providing quality and dedicated services to the people. Nazarbayev wins Kazakhstan re-election landlside: exit poll ASTANA, Dec 4 (AFP) - Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev has won a landslide re-election with almost 85 percent of ballots cast in Sunday's presidential vote, according to an exit poll in the Central Asian country. The exit poll, conducted by the Eurasian Rating Agency, gave the veteran president 84.55 percent of the vote, followed by opposition leader Zharmakhan Tuyakbai with 9.58 percent. In third place was former labour minister Alikhan Baimenov with 3.46 percent, then communist candidate Yerasyl Abilkasymov with 1.43 percent and environmentalist Mels Yeleusizov with 0.98 percent.(First Posted @ 21:50 PST Updated @ 23:32 PST) Security incidents in Iraq, Dec 4 BAGHDAD - Dec 4 (Reuters) U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad. Two U.S soldiers were killed and several others wounded when their convoy was attacked in a roadside bombing in a south eastern suburb of Baghdad, the U.S. military said. A military spokeswoman said that two Humvees were destroyed in the ambush. Two Iraqi policemen were killed when gunmen attacked their patrol in Ahmar village, about 40 km (25 miles) east of Baquba, police said. Two civilians were killed and 26 wounded when a bomb placed under a car exploded in central Baghdad, a police source said. The target of the explosion was not clear. A women and two children were wounded when U.S forces conducted an air strike, bombing two houses in Baiji, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad, a joint coordination centre statement said. The air strike followed a mortar attack on a U.S base near Baiji. The imam of a Shi'ite mosque was killed by gunmen in eastern Baghdad, police said. Sheikh Abdul Salam abdul Hussein was a follower of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. Two insurgents were killed and 55 suspects detained when the Iraqi army conducted a raid in Udaim, near Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, the army said. The raid followed an ambush on Saturday that killed 19 Iraqi soldiers. Two people were killed, including a policeman, when a bomb planted on the side of the road exploded in Zarkuush, a village 70 km (43 miles) east of Baquba, police said. The target of the bomb was not clear. Five members of the Iraqi security forces were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said. Reports conflicted about whether they were members of the army or police and one source said one wounded man later died.(Posted @ 22:55 PST) Musharraf visits Yemen to discuss anti-terrorism fight SANAA, Dec 4 (AFP) - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf arrived Sunday in Sanaa to hold talks with his Yemeni counterpart Ali Abdullah Saleh on bilateral relations and cooperation in the fight against terrorism. They were due to discuss ways to boost cooperation in the economic sector, trade exchanges, investments as well as in the security sector and the fight against terrorism, said Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Kurbi. Kurbi was quoted as saying by the state news agency SABA that Musharraf will oversee the signing of several bilateral cooperation agreements during his three-day visit to Yemen. Musharraf and Saleh will also discuss issues linked to the summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference due to be held in the holy city of Mecca in western Saudi Arabia on December 8-9, he said. Musharraf asks KCCI for investment in energy sector KUWAIT Dec 04 (PPI) Addressing the Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) Sunday afternoon, the President asked the Kuwaiti businessmen to invest in Pakistan's energy and power sectors. He said there is a tremendous scope of enhancing trade and economic ties between Pakistan and Kuwait. He said Pakistan and Kuwait enjoy very strong political and economic ties. He said economic and trade relations cement the political ties between the two countries, stressing the need for forging close economic ties through joint ventures and investment. He invited the Kuwaiti business concern to come in a big way and invest specially in energy and power sectors. He said we are looking for investment in Hydro, Electricity, coal and Wind-mills energy. Eleven other people were injured in the roof collapse at the municipal pool in Chusovoi, a town near the city of Perm in the Ural mountains, the crisis centre said. "There was a suicide attack against a US led-coalition convoy in the western outskirts of Kandahar city today. One passerby was killed and two others wounded," police spokesman Abdul Hakim Angar told AFP. "The suicide bomber was walking and detonated himself but missed the US convoy," he added. However, a spokesman for the US-led military said the attack involved an improvised explosive device (IED). "Our initial report says that there was an IED strike in Kandahar city, involving coalition forces," Colonel Jerry O'Hara, coalition military spokesman told AFP.
