Help needed to maintain food runs to quake victims: UN ISLAMABAD, Dec 3 (AFP) The UN World Food Programme Saturday appealed for around 70 million dollars in urgent assistance to maintain food airlifts through the winter for people in quake-ravaged north-eastern Pakistan. "We need substantial help, and the helicopters are critical, given the weather, the rugged terrain and our need to pre-position a huge amount of food in places throughout the affected area before the weather gets terrible," WFP executive director James Morris told a news conference here. Morris said the WFP could keep making aid flights to remote areas through January, but needed some 70 million dollars to fund the air operations until the end of April.(Posted @ 21:06 PST) Cricket-Shoaib hopes victory was special to quake victims LAHORE, Pakistan, Dec 3 (Reuters) Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar who finished with 17 wickets in the 2-0 test series win over England said he wanted his performance to cheer the victims of the Oct. 8 earthquake. "The devastation caused by the earthquake was in our minds when we started this series and we wanted to do something special for them. I wanted to do something to make them smile," he said on Saturday. Shoaib, 30, said the victory over England was special and he was happy that he could dedicate something memorable to the earthquake victims.(Posted @ 17:45 PST) Target of 210,000 tents for quake hit areas achieved LAHORE, Dec 3 (APP): Punjab achieved the target of 210,000 tents to the quake- hit areas with the despatch of the last consignment of 11590 tents on Friday. Director General (Relief), Irfan Elahi speaking on the occasion said that the last consignment included truck-loads of atta, rice, pulses, sugar, tea and other essential items. He said the province would continue relief operations till the complete rehabilitation of the quake victims.(Posted @ 09:48 PST) Turk Foundation to assist education sector in quake-hit areas MUZAFFARABAD, Dec 3 (APP): Pak- Turk Foundation will set up ten schools in earthquake ravaged areas of Muzaffaabad, Manshra and Balakot, Muhammed Ramzan, head of education wing of Pak- Turk Foundation, said Friday at a briefing to a fifty-member delegation of Turkish businessmen. The Turkish visited a tent village established by Pak-Turk Foundation at Dheri Sayyadan in the outskirt of Muzaffarabad. At Dhani village near Muzaffarabad Chief of Alsuffa Foundation announced that farmers will be provided quality wheat seed and fertilizer free of cost.(Posted @ 09:38 PST) UAE minister offers to adopt 200 quake hit families ISLAMABAD, Dec 3 (APP): United Arab Emirates Minister for Education Sheikh Mubarak Al-Nahyan who is also the Chairman of Al-Falah Bank and head of Warid Telecommunication has offered to adopt 200 families uprooted in Oct 8 earthquake and said he was ready to do more for the rehabilitation of the survivors. At a reception for President of Pakistan Muslim League Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in Abu Dhabi on Friday, the UAE minister desired to have full details of the requirements and needs of these families.(Posted @ 09:28 PST) MQM sets up tent school in Vihari village near Bagh KARACHI, Dec 2 (APP)- Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has established a tent school for girls at Vihari village near Bagh, says a Press release. Meanwhile, Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister, Murtaza Memon along with other party leaders visited different quake affected areas near Bagh and distributed relief goods among some 960 affected families.
