French parliament adopts new terrorism bill PARIS, Nov 29 (AFP) - France's lower house of parliament on Tuesday adopted a new terrorism bill drawn up following the London transport bombings, that is set to allow greatly increased video surveillance of public places. The text was supported by the 373 deputies of the ruling centre-right UMP and its ally the UDF, while the 27 deputies from the Communist and Green parties voted against and the main opposition Socialists abstained.(Posted @ 22:10 PST)

President, Prime Minister discuss issues of national importance Rawalpindi, Nov 29 PPI: President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at a meeting Tuesday in Rawalpindi discussed issues of national importance. Prime Minister apprised the President of recently concluded Commonwealth Summit which he attended in Malta and said it was after six years that Pakistan was invited to attend the Summit. He said all heads of government appreciated the developments taking place in Pakistan in political-economic reforms. Two US soldiers killed BAGHDAD, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Two U.S. soldiers were killed on Tuesday when their patrol struck a roadside bomb north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said. Pakistan hands over power company to Saudi-led consortium KARACHI, Nov 29 (AFP) - Pakistan handed over the ownership of its second largest energy company Tuesday to a private Saudi-Pakistani consortium under a deal signed earlier this month, Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Privatisation and Investment minister said. The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) was officially sold to local firm Hasan Associates -- which has Al-Jummaih Group of Saudi Arabia as its partner -- for 340 million dollars. The consortium has so far paid 258 million dollars to the state-run commission. The new buyer is to invest 500 million dollars in KESC over three years.(Posted @ 19:42 PST)

Hindu legislator, seven others shot dead in northern India LUCKNOW, India, Nov 29 (APP/AFP) - Gunmen shot dead opposition Hindu nationalist legislator Krishnanand Rai and seven others including security guards Tuesday in Ballia town, 350 kilometres southeast of Lucknow. Britain urging EU to ease trade restrictions on Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Nov 29 (APP): Britain Tuesday assured that it was trying to convince the European Union EU to ease import restrictions from Pakistan to help it cope with the aftermath of the Oct 8 devastating earthquake. British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Office Kim Howells after meetings with Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar told newsmen of efforts by his country to seek concessions for Pakistan. "Prime Minister Tony Blair is working very hard to convince member states that they should think very hard at lifting some of the restrictions [on Pakistani imports]," Howells said. Pakistan wants Kashmir issue resolution Head Baloki, Kasur, Nov 29 PPI: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Tuesday reiterated that Pakistan wants resolution of Kashmir dispute, acceptable to all the three parties, India, Pakistan and people of Kashmir. Aid- Bosnia donates goods for quake hit area ISLAMABAD, November 29 (PPI) Bosnian Ambassador to Pakistan Mr Damir Dzanko Tusday donated three trucks load of relief goods for the earthquake affectees in Azad Kashmir and NWFP . These goods, mainly medicines,worth Rs 120 million, have been donated by pharmaceutical companies of Boznia Herzegovnia. The Bosnian government itself has supplied tents, blankets, medicines, wheal chairs and artificial limbs etc. Speaking on the occasion the ambassador said seven more female doctors have arrived while thirteen doctors were already working in Ghari Habibullah. Security incidents in Iraq, Nov 29 BAGHDAD, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Six Iranians, including two women, and an Iraqi woman were kidnapped after gunmen opened fire on their bus on Monday, seriously wounding the Iraqi driver, police said. The group were on their way to a shrine in Balad, 70 km north of Baghdad. Police said the three women were released later on Monday. Thafer Migwil Hazza, a relative of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and a former Iraqi army officer, was kidnapped from his house by gunmen on Monday in Tikrit, police said. Bashar Shnawa Gaber, a senior member of the Shi'ite Dawa party, was shot dead in Baghdad on Monday, his party said. 'Pawar-play' ends Dalmiya's reign in Indian cricket KOLKATA, India, Nov 29 (AFP) - Political heavyweight Sharad Pawar wrested control of India's cricket board on Tuesday, ending Jagmohan Dalmiya's more than 25-year stranglehold on the country's richest sporting body. Federal agriculture minister Pawar defeated Dalmiya's incumbent nominee, Ranbir Singh Mahendra, 20-11 in the election for the president of the BCCI in Kolkata. Pawar, 64, won the election on his second attempt after losing out to Mahendra last year. At that time, it was Dalmiya's casting vote that decided the secret ballot which was tied 15-15 with one vote disqualifed. Canadian government toppled in no-confidence vote OTTAWA, Nov 29 (AFP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin is expected to ask Canada's de facto head of state, Governor General Michaelle Jean, to dissolve parliament and set an election date on Tuesday, a day after the opposition ousted his scandal-tainted minority government. Martin's Liberal Party lost a censure vote by 171 votes to 133 late Monday in the House of Commons amid acrimonious exchanges over corruption allegations. Indian government unable to stem Maoist violence: official NEW DELHI, Nov 29 (AFP) - The Indian government said Tuesday it has been unable to stem growing Maoist insurgencies in parts of the country. "We've been quite successful in controlling terrorism in states like occupied Kashmir and in the northeast but as far as Naxalism (Maoist violence) is concerned, we have not achieved similar results," Home Minister Shivraj Patil told the parliament. Besides the Maoists, Kashmiris are fighting New Delhi's rule in occupied Kashmir while tribal rebels are active in six of India's seven northeastern states. Relatives furious as China mine toll nears 150 QITAIHE, China, Nov 29 (AFP) - The death toll from one of China's biggest mining disasters in recent years neared 150 Tuesday.With just three miners unaccounted for, Xinhua news agency said the number of miners confirmed dead from the Sunday night cave-in at the state-run Dongfeng coal mine in the northeast province of Heilongjiang was 146. The figure included two workers killed outside the mine, and that there were 11 miners still missing underground, meaning the final tally could be 151. Eight dead, 23 seriously hurt in first Bangladesh suicide bombs CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, Nov 29 (AFP) - Eight people were killed and 23 badly hurt Tuesday in what police said were Bangladesh's first suicide bombings. Police accused the hardline Jamayetul Mujahideen. The first attack was at Chittagong's main court where three people, a suicide bomber and two police officers, died. Five police officers and another would-be suicide bomber were seriously injured, police said.A man approached police in the court, and "when he saw he would be searched he threw a bomb and detonated another, killing himself and a police officer." A second man was injured after detonating a bomb strapped to his body. The second attack targeted the bar association in Gazipur where a suicide bomber wearing lawyers' robes and four others died, police said. German woman, Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in Iraq BAGHDAD, Nov 29 (AFP) A German woman and six Iranian Shiite pilgrims, including two women, have been kidnapped in Iraq in the latest strike against foreigners in the war-torn country. News of the hostage-taking emerged as the US ambassador to Iraq said Washington was seeking talks with some rebels and would reach out to Iran for help in quelling the insurgency that has raged since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. The German woman, said to be an archeologist in her 40s who had worked in Iraq for some time and who speaks Arabic, was seized a day before an American, two Canadians and a Briton were also taken hostage in Baghdad. Magnitude 5 quake jolts northern Iran TEHRAN, Iran, Nov 29 (APP/AP) A moderate earthquake jolted northern Iran Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports on possible casualties or damage, state-run television reported. The television report said the magnitude-5 quake shook Agh Ghala, a small town in Golestan Province, in northern Iran near the Caspian Sea. A magnitude-5.9 quake shook a sparsely populated area of southern Iran on Sunday, flattening seven villages, killing 10 people and injuring 70. The temblor was felt as far away as Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Iran is located on a number of seismic fault lines and, on average, experiences at least one slight quake every day. The last major quake to hit southern Iran was in February, when a magnitude-6.4 temblor rocked Zarand, a town of about 15,000 people in Kerman province, 602 miles (969 kilometers) southeast of Tehran.
