8 more tentage villages to be established for quake-affectees MUZAFFARABD, Nov 26 (APP): The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet Satuday decided to set up eight more tentage villages in Muzaffarabd, Bagh and Rawalakot to shelter at least 40,000 people rendered homeless in the October 8 earthquake . Briefing the cabinet, the AJK Chief Secretary said additional Deputy Commissioners will be Incharge in the respective districts to oversee and supervise relief activities of these camps. The cabinet ordered that orphans and widows should be accommodated in SOS Villages.(Posted @ 19:18 PST) Army,volunteers, foreign teams busy in relief activities in quake hit areas ISLAMABAD, Nov 26 (APP): Pakistan Army, volunteers and foreign teams are busy in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the earthquake affected areas of AJK and NWFP. The committee's other members are :Khair Mohammed Junijo, Mueen Afzal, Sikandar Hayat Jamali, Shams Malik, Chaudhry Mohammed Saeed and Khalid Rafi. The committee will review audit reports of the President's Relief Fund for Earthquake victims and submit it to the parliamentary committee. Auditor General of Pakistan and foreign auditors will conduct audits of the quake relief fund.(Posted @ 19:02 PST) Quake-hit Pakistan sees aid pledges as 'vote of confidence' VALLETTA, Nov 26 (AFP) - Pakistan has received pledges of aid totalling 6.2 billion dollars (5.3 billion euros), Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Saturday, describing the response as a "tremendous vote of confidence" in his government. "We are very pleased and overwhelmed by the response," Aziz told a news conference on the sidelines of the Commonwealth summit that opened Friday in Malta. "It is a tremendous vote of confidence in the transparency, efficacy, the ability of the government to get a consensus on what the damage is and what needs to be done," he said. Aziz described the October 8 quake that killed 73,000 people in northwestern Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir and left 3.5 million homeless as "a major human tragedy", saying the nation had "a colossal rebuilding task on our hand." (Posted @ 17:24 PST) AJK President vows to build corruption free new AJK Bagh, Nov 26 (PPI) President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Maj-Gen (Retd) Sardar Mohammad Anwar Khan addressing earthquake affectees here and in adjoining village Tangiat warned officials and all concerned that substandard construction would not be allowed during rehabilitation process. He promised complete transparency in distribution of compensation and asked people to get rid of corrupt 'thekedar' (contractors) mafia and build their new houses by getting guidelines from the Army engineers. AJK President visited shelters provided by the World Aid Foundation of UK and appreciated excellent relief work done by the foreign NGOs. He also visited relief camp of the National Rural Support Program (NRCP), the technical education centre and praised a model shelter prepared by the NRCP. (Posted @ 17:16 PST) Pakistan to suffer second wave of devastation, if it does not receive cash quickly: WT WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (APP)- Stating that the world clearly has the will to help, 'The Washington Times' has said if Pakistan does not receive the cash quickly, it will suffer a second wave of devastation as winter descends on the Himalayan people who lack the basic resources to survive. The editorial states that donor countries should announce "when they expect to deliver their pledged assistance." "It costs about $13 million per month just to keep those made homeless from the earthquake alive. The United Nations has said it will run out of relief money by the end of the year, unless they quickly receive more resources." (Posted @ 16:45 PST) Turkish journalists shocked over scale of disaster ISLAMABAD, Nov 26 (APP): A delegation of Turkish newsmen visiting quake ravaged areas of NWFP and Azad Kashmir at the invitation of Pak-Turk International Cag Educational Foundation (Pak-Turk ICEF) was told that the foundation had provided over 6000 winterized tents, food for 8000 people daily, field kitchens, medical equipment and medicines, large tents for schools, toys for children, besides free education for 350 students of affected areas in its schools chain. The Turkish journalist were overwhelmed by the scale and intensity of the Oct 8 quake, and were also appreciative of the steps being taken by Pakistan for their relief and rehabilitation. (Posted @ 16:32 PST) All Party Kashmir Group promise to have debate on earthquake in House of Commons LONDON Nov 25(APP): The All Party Parliamentary Kashmir Group in the House of Commons has promised to kick start a debate on the devastating earthquake which struck Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on Oct.8. This assurance was given by the group MPs to the visiting AJK Opposition Leader Barrister Sultan Mehmoud Choudhary who addressed its members in the Committee room of the Commons the other day. Sultan in his remarks on the occasion said the current phase was to save lives of those facing severe winter in inhospitable terrain and unless immediate help was provided more people could die as a result of freezing temperatures.(Posted @ 10:45 PST)
