Car bomb kills three outside KFC in Karachi KARACHI, Nov 15 (Reuters) A small Suzuki sedan exploded outside a KFC fast-food restaurant in Karachi before 9 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Tuesday, killing three people and wounding 15, police and doctors said. Some victims suffered severe burns in the bombing, which blew a metre-wide (3-feet-wide) hole in the street and engulfed it in a fireball that gutted six or seven other parked cars in the centre of Pakistan's commercial hub. Provincial authorities said they suspected extremist militants were to blame and cast doubt on a claim of responsibility by a separatist group from nearby Balochistan province which said it had targeted an office of a state-run Pakistani oil company. The bomb gutted the restaurant on the ground floor of the six-storey block, shattering all the windows in the building which houses several oil and gas exploration firms, including Pakistan Petroleum (PPL). "Indications are that extremist and militant organizations could be involved in the blast," a spokesman for the Sindh provincial government in Karachi said. Police said they had found some clues from security cameras mounted on the Pakistan Industrial Development Corp (PIDC) building. "This is an act of terrorism and apparently KFC was the target," Manzoor Mughal, chief of investigation for Karachi police, told Reuters. The restaurant was shut at the time, but the street, one of Karachi's busiest, was full of people arriving for work. Two security guards for the Muslim Commercial Bank died at once and a third died later in hospital, police said. Doctors said six people had been admitted to hospital in a critical condition, some with severe burns. The materials used, 5 kg (11 lb) of military-style RDX explosive and gunpowder, made the blast particularly intense, police added. (Updated@ 23:40 PST)

Cricket-Pakistan want England to play in Karachi despite bomb MULTAN, Pakistan, Nov 15 (Reuters) Pakistan cricket authorities would like England to play a one-day international in Karachi next month despite the bomb blast there on Tuesday. The bomb blast outside a fast food restaurant that killed two people and injured around 15 was close to where the England team is scheduled to stay for the third one-dayer of their tour. "Bomb blasts have been a part and parcel these days and if Australia can play in England after the London blasts and if Sri Lanka can play in India after Delhi blasts then England can play in Karachi," Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan told reporters. "We hope the blast will not affect the tour and we will not take any decisions on the Karachi one-dayer in panic and are in constant touch with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Pakistan government." Khan said the already strict security at grounds where England was playing would be further enhanced. There was no immediate reaction from the England management. (Posted @ 14:59 PST)

Israel pushing Palestinians to civil war: Abbas RAMALLAH, West Bank, Nov 15 (Reuters) President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel on Tuesday of trying to avoid peace talks and push Palestinians into civil war by insisting that militants be disarmed ahead of any negotiations on statehood. Abbas said in a televised address that Israel was acting as though it had "no peace partner". "(Israel) is seeking to impose a very dangerous option, and that is a long-term solution based on setting up a state with provisional borders controlled by the Israelis, divided by settlements into isolated cantons," Abbas said. In another speech delivered on his behalf at a conference in Israel marking the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, Abbas said he believed a deal could be possible. "If we have an Israeli partner willing to engage in these negotiations, mark our words we do not need more than six months to conclude an historic permanent status treaty," he said.(Posted @ 19:16 PST)

Afghan, Iraq laws link Islam and democracy VIENNA, Nov 15 (Reuters) The presidents of Afghanistan and Iraq told a three-day conference called "Islam in a Pluralistic World" on Tuesday in Austria that their countries' new constitutions proved democracy, civil rights and women's equality were compatible with the holy Quran. Presidents Hamid Karzai and Jalal Talabani were among several Muslim leaders at the gathering urging Westerners to stop linking their religion with violence just because a tiny minority misused Islam's name to justify terror. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried stressed Washington's view that Islam and democracy were compatible. Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said "Women's rights are a common problem in all Islamic countries…today many governments hide behind the shield of Islam to justify tyranny by presenting a false and distorted interpretation of Islam," she said. Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami politely chided the organisers of the conference for focusing only on how Muslims had to adapt to changing times. "Many Christians have an especially radical (negative) approach to pluralism as some Muslims do, both are mistaken," he said.(Posted @ 19:12 PST)

Israeli officer cleared in Palestinian girl's death JERUSALEM, Nov 15 (Reuters) An Israeli army captain accused of riddling with bullets the body of a 13-year-old Palestinian girl in Gaza after she was shot by his troops was cleared by a court on Tuesday of any wrongdoing, the army said. The girl Iman al-Hams was shot some 20 times on Oct. 5, 2004 near an army outpost on her way to school in Rafah. The army had launched the probe after soldiers told local media that after they had shot and killed the girl, the officer had gone out, shot her twice and then riddled her body with bullets from head to toe. The case has revived human rights groups' charges that Israeli troops use excessive force against Palestinians and are almost never punished by the military for their actions.(Posted @ 21:36 PST)

He was accused of fraud, breach of trust and perjury – charges carrying a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison.
