Two Kenyans shot dead in referendum violence MOMBASA, Kenya, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Kenyan security forces shot dead two opponents of a proposed new constitution on Friday in the latest flare-up of a tumultuous campaign ahead of a Nov. 21 referendum, police said. President postpones COMSTECH General Assembly meeting ISLAMABAD, Nov 11 (APP): Due to the calamitous circumstances President General Pervez Musharraf, who is also Chairman COMSTECH (OIC Ministerial Standing Committee for Science & Technology), has decided to postpone the upcoming 12th General Assembly Meeting of COMSTECH, which was scheduled to be held here from November 22-24. Senior Saddam aide dies - Al Arabiya DUBAI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's deputy Izzat Ibrahim has died, Al Arabiya satellite television quoted a Baath party statement as saying on Friday. Ibrahim was the most senior member of the former regime still at large. Maoists storm Indian police centre, kill 5 cadets NEW DELHI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Maoists rebels stormed a training centre for auxiliary policemen in eastern India on Friday, killing five police cadets and wounding 18 people, including villagers caught in the crossfire, police said. Around 300 Maoist rebels, some of them armed with automatic weapons, attacked the centre near Giridih town, some 150 km (93 miles) northeast of Ranchi, capital of Jharkhand state. "The gun battle is still on and some of the injured are critical," Inspector General of Police B.C. Verma said. China unveils 2008 Olympics mascots BEIJING, Nov 11 (AFP) - Beijing unveiled five mascots for the 2008 Olympic Games in an elaborate ceremony Friday, 1,000 days ahead of the opening ceremony of the world's most prestigious sporting event. In a nationally televised program beamed live from Tiananmen Square and the Capital Gymnasium, the five cartoon characters were presented by Chinese Communist Party Politiburo member Jia Qinglin. The colorful mascots include a traditional Chinese doll, a panda bear, a Tibetan antelope, a Beijing swallow and a "fish child." South Asian ministers propose economic union plan DHAKA, Nov 11 (AFP) - Seven South Asian foreign ministers met Friday ahead of a weekend summit in the Bangladesh capital to push a free trade agreement and a possible "economic union", officials said. The foreign ministers, who were still finalising the summit agenda , also hoped to reach an accord on combating terrorism, in addition to implementing a South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA). They also discussed setting up of a new economic body to take regional integration beyond SAFTA, an Indian official present at the discussions said. "The ministers have made an ambitious recommendation -- the setting up of a high economic council comprising ministers of planning and finance and their senior officials," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Rice on surprise visit to Iraq BAGHDAD, Nov 11 (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a surprise visit to Iraq Friday and urged its fractious war-battered communities to bridge their differences ahead of next month's general election. "Even though there are many hardships, the fact that Iraqis continue to vote in large numbers and are preparing for free and fair elections is indeed inspirational," she told a news conference with Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari. Rice flew in from Bahrain under tight security. She first went briefly to Mosul and then on to Baghdad. Following talks in Baghdad with Jaafari and Sunni Arab leaders, she praised efforts to bring the disempowered minority community back into the political process. All eight on board crashed Afghan plane killed KABUL, Nov 11 (APP/AFP) - All eight people on board a cargo plane that crashed in Afghanistan Friday were killed, a government official said, adding the dead were Russian, Ukrainian and Pakistani nationals. Security incidents in Iraq, Nov. 11 Baghdad, Nov 11 (Reuters) One insurgent was killed and an Iraqi policeman was wounded when clashes broke out in Ghazaliya district in western Baghdad, police said Friday. Three Iraqi men, woman behind Jordan attacks -Qaeda DUBAI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - An Iraqi married couple and two other men carried out the suicide bombings at three hotels in the Jordanian capital Amman which killed 57 people this week, al Qaeda in Iraq said in an Internet statement on Friday. India PM worried by danger of 'failed' neighbours NEW DELHI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday the danger of failed states emerging in the region posed a grave security threat. "The danger of a number of failed states emerging in our neighbourhood has far-reaching consequences for our region and our people," Singh said at a function organised by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, a strategic thinktank , hours before he was to leave for Dhaka to attend the SAARC summit. "The impact includes crises which generate an inflow of refugees and by destabilisation of our border areas, " he said. Singh did not mention which countries he thought could become failed states, but all the SAARC members have security issues. "We see signs of the ills of disaffection, alienation and conflict not only in India but also across our neighbourhood. US senators demand report on secret CIA prisons abroad WASHINGTON, Nov 10 (AFP) The US Senate on Thursday demanded that the country's intelligence chief brief lawmakers on reportedly CIA-run secret prisons for terror suspects. The Senate voted 82-9 for an amendment offered by Democratic Senator John Kerry requiring Director of National Intelligence (DNI) John Negroponte to make a classified report to the House and Senate intelligence committees. The amendment was added to a defence budget bill whose final version must be ironed out with the House of Representatives. Surge in Chinese spying on British business: report LONDON, Nov 11 (AFP) Britain's security services were becoming increasingly worried by a rise in Chinese espionage, a British newspaper reported Friday.The Guardian daily said that officials did not know what impact the espionage was having and how widespread it was. More vehicles burn in French unrest as Chirac says lessons must be learnt PARIS, Nov 11 (AFP) More vehicles were set alight in suburban violence in France early Friday after President Jacques Chirac said the country needed to learn lessons from two weeks of unrest.
