Three Amman hotels hit by explosions AMMAN, Nov 9 (AFP) - Three hotels in Amman -- the Radisson SAS, the Grand Hyatt and the Days Inn were hit by explosions Wednesday night, with at least 18 people killed, security sources said. The sources said the dead were reported at the Radisson SAS and Grand Hyatt. State television confirmed the three explosions while hospital sources said several more people were wounded and rushed to hospitals. The first blast hit the five-star Radisson SAS at 9:02 pm (1902 GMT) in the upmarket western part of the capital and could be heard for kilometres (miles) around and was immediately followed by a second blast at the Grand Hyatt. Prime Minister Adnan Badran also rushed to the Grand Hyatt, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, while police threw barricades around the neighborhood home to several five star hotels.(Posted @ 01:05PST)

Syria invites UN investigator for Hariri talks DAMASCUS, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Syria has invited a United Nations investigator to Damascus to discuss cooperation with a probe into the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, the state news agency SANA said on Wednesday. Syria last month dismissed a U.N. report implicating its officials in the bombing that killed Hariri, saying it was politically motivated. A Security Council resolution demanded it cooperate fully with the probe or face unspecified action. "As we hope that you would agree on the visit ... we propose in this regard the signing of a memorandum of understanding with your committee to achieve the desired cooperation," Ghada Murad, head of a Syrian panel set up in October to investigate the killing, said in a letter to U.N. investigator Detlev Mehlis.(Posted @ 23:30 PST)

India thrash Sri Lanka by seven wickets RAJKOT, India, Nov 9 (APP/AFP) - India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the sixth one-day international here on Wednesday to take a 5-1 lead in the seven-match series. Yuvraj Singh smashed an unbeaten 79 as the Indians surpassed Sri Lanka's modest 196 in the 35th over of a one-sided match at the Madhavrao Scindia stadium here. Four killed, 15 missing in Chinese cargo ship capsize BEIJING, Nov 9 (APP/AFP) - Four people died and 15 remained missing after a cargo ship capsized at a northeast China port, state media reported Wednesday. The ship overturned while off-loading about 100 tons of bricks at Changhai County Haiyang Island port in Dalian city, Liaoning province on Monday night, the Xinhua news agency said. All 46 crew were thrown into the sea, but 27 were rescued. The bodies of two men and two women had been recovered by Wednesday evening, with more believed trapped inside or underneath the vessel, Xinhua said. Cargo ships in China are forbidden from carrying passengers, but 39 of the people onboard were passengers, Xinhua cited a crew member saying. Two killed in new Ethiopia clash with police ADDIS ABABA, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Two students were killed on Wednesday in a clash with police in Ambo, a town 125 km (80 miles) west of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, residents said. Information Minister Berhan Hailu confirmed the deaths, the first reported incident of unrest for several days in Ethiopia. "There was a problem there and two people were killed," he told Reuters. Pakistan reacts strongly on abduction of diplomat's son ISLAMABAD, Nov 9 (APP): Pakistan Wednesday strong condemned abduction and harassment of son of an official of Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and demanded thorough investigation of the matter. Foreign Office in a statement issued here said that resentment of Pakistan has been conveyed to Indian High Commission in Islamabad and Acting High Commissioner T.C.A. Raghavan was summoned to Foreign Office today and Pakistan's concern was conveyed to him. Six killed, 25 injured as trains collide in India NEW DELHI, Nov 9 (AFP) - At least six people were killed and 25 injured Wednesday when a passenger train collided with a goods train in eastern India, police said. The toll could rise as two of four derailed passenger coaches were covered in coal from the goods train, the Press Trust of India quoted Jharkhand's inspector general of police for railways, A.K. Sinha, as saying. The passenger train was leaving Barwadi railway station in Jharkhand state when it collided with the goods train, a railway official said. A correspondent for news channel Aaj Tak reported he had seen six or seven bodies being taken out of the derailed coaches and that 10 to 12 more bodies were yet to be recovered. He said dozens more were injured. Malaysian bomb expert Azahari blows himself up JAKARTA, Nov 9 (AFP) - Top terror suspect Azahari Husin blew himself up Wednesday after being cornered by Indonesian police at his hideout in East Java, a journalist at the scene told Indonesian TV. "The body was in pieces but his face could still be recognised by two members of the anti-terrorist unit from Jakarta," Karni Ilyas, who was with the police anti-terror unit when they entered the house, told ANTV. China warns of attacks on luxury hotels: US embassy BEIJING, Nov 9 (AFP) - Chinese police have warned that Islamic extremists could be planning an attack on luxury hotels in China next week, the US embassy in Beijing said Wednesday. "The embassy has learned that Chinese police advised hotels that Islamic extremist elements could be planning to attack four- and five-star hotels in China sometime over the course of the next week," said a statement on the embassy's website. Hamas leader does not rule out talks with Israel JERUSALEM, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Islamic militant group Hamas does not rule out eventual talks with Israel, a state it officially aims to destroy, a leader of the Palestinian faction said on Wednesday in a rare interview with Israeli media. Japan to buy poultry from bird flu-free India SINGAPORE, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Japan has approved importing poultry from India for the first time as Asia's leading poultry buyer seeks alternatives because of bird flu outbreaks in other countries, an Indian poultry trade official said on Wednesday. Japan currently bans raw poultry imports from countries such as Thailand and China, which have reported outbreaks of the deadly poultry disease. India has no reported cases of the virus. China will produce own Tamiflu if bird flu crisis escalates BEIJING, Nov 9 (AFP) - Chinese health authorities intend to wave patent laws and produce their own version of the anti-bird flu drug Tamiflu in the event of the health crisis escalating, state press said Wednesday.
