Suspected al Qaeda militant caught in Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Nov 3 (Reuters) A suspected al Qaeda militant has been killed and another captured during a shoot-out with Pakistani security men in Quetta, a government minister said on Thursday. Al Jazeera television said it had received a statement that two people had been arrested, identifying one as Mustafa Setmariam, a Syrian with a $5 million U.S reward on his head and wanted in connection with the Madrid bombings in 2004. But Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said authorities were still trying to determine if the arrested man was Setmariam. He believed neither the arrested man nor the man killed in the Tuesday shoot-out were "high-value targets". "They are Arabs but their nationality is not yet known," Ahmed said. Al Jazeera said the two suspected al Qaeda militants had been arrested in Quetta on Monday. (Posted @ 14:25 PST)

Australian senate passes terror law amendments after PM's attack warning CANBERRA, Nov 3 (AFP) The Australian senate rushed through anti-terror laws Thursday as Prime Minister John Howard denied his warning about a credible threat of attack was a diversion from the government's political problems. Howard refused to reveal details of the alleged plot that prompted his warning, saying only "the concerns we have are not totally related to matters distant to Australia". The lack of detail led critics of the conservative government to accuse Howard of issuing the warning to help push through a raft of new anti-terrorism laws that critics say are a threat to civil liberties. They said the warning also diverted attention from unpopular workplace reforms the conservative government introduced to parliament this week. (Posted @ 14:40 PST)
