Deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu confirmed in Britain LONDON, Oct 23 (AFP) - A South American parrot that died from bird flu while in British quarantine was carrying the H5N1 strain of bird flu that has killed more than 60 people in Asia, officials said Sunday. The virus was detected in a parrot from Surinam which had been in quarantine since its arrival in Britain last month, according to the British department of environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA).(Posted @ 23:45 PST) Malta police find five dead migrants in sea VALLETTA, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Maltese police said on Sunday they had recovered five bodies thought to be migrants who drowned in the Mediterranean. They were found in the sea 10 to 15 miles east of the island in the afternoon after a fisherman spotted one of them. None carried identification documents. The police said they feared more corpses will be found when a search resumes on Monday. Many African migrants seeking a better life try to cross the Mediterranean to enter Europe illegally. The communal tension forced the minions of law to fire in the air to disperse the mob, police sources were quoted as saying by a news report received here. Croatia kills thousands of birds to fight avian flu ZAGREB, Oct 23, 2005 (AFP) - Croatian authorities continued Sunday to kill thousands of domesticated birds in an area where dead swans infected by bird flu were found, national radio reported.
