Six die in occupied Kashmir violence SRINAGAR, occupied Kashmir Oct 19 (AFP) - Four militants and two other persons were killed in three shootouts in occupied Kashmir, officials said Wednesday . A Muslim woman and a Sikh man were killed Wednesday and 10 others, including a police officer, were injured in a clash which began when militants opened fire at a police party in southern Pampore township. Meanwhile, Indian troops killed three militants during a gunbattle, the army said. "The three were killed during a gunbattle late Tuesday in Pulwama district," army spokesman said. Two French soldiers wounded in Afghanistan blast KABUL, Oct 19 (AFP) - An improvised bomb wounded two French soldiers on patrol near Afghanistan's capital Kabul Wednesday, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. Saddam trial adjourned to November 28 BAGHDAD, Oct 19 (AFP) - The trial of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on charges of crimes against humanity was adjourned Wednesday to November 28, an AFP correspondent in the court said. PM approves ETPB restructuring ISLAMABAD, Oct 19 (APP): Prime Minister ShaukatAziz Wednesday approved the restructuring of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and called for more professional and efficient management of religious sites. The Prime Minister during a presentation by Chairman ETPB, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Zulfiqar Ali Khan directed the Board to ensure proper management of religious sites of the Sikhs and Hindus throughout the country and directed that all necessary facilities be extended to the pilgrims.The Prime Minister directed the Board to explore possibility of constructing a hotel around Taxila or Hassanabdal to provide better lodging to Sikh and Buddhist pilgrims. Security incidents in Iraq, Oct 19 Baghdad, Oct 19 (Reuters) Two Iraqi police commandos were killed and three wounded when security forces clashed with insurgents in the Gazaliya district in western Baghdad, police said. In Falluja, in the Sunni province of Anbar west of the capital, two Iraqi soldiers were killed and two wounded by a roadside bomb, an army officer said. China, US agree to improve military ties BEIJING, Oct 19 (AFP) - China and the United States agreed to improve military ties Wednesday after US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned that a rapid and secretive military buildup was sending "mixed signals" about China's intentions, US officials said. President Hu Jintao told Rumsfeld that although the military relationship had improved over the years there was still room to expand, senior US defense officials told reporters. "All this will better help military forces of our two countries to better enhance mutual understanding and friendship," Hu said said in the meeting in the Great Hall of the People. Rumsfeld earlier made an unprecedented visit to the headquarters of the Strategic Rocket Forces whose commander, General Jing Zhiyuan, assured him of China's policy of "no first use" of nuclear weapons, the officials said.(Posted @ 16:30 PST)

Saddam charges include murder, torture BAGHDAD, Oct 19 (AFP) - The Iraqi judge trying Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants told the accused Wednesday they were charged with crimes including murder and warned they face the death penalty if found guilty."They are charged with murder, forced expulsion, imprisonment, failure to comply with international law and torture," chief judge Rizkar Mohammed Amin told the eight on the first day of their trial. "These defendants have personal responsibilty in the case," he said, adding that according to the legal code, the charges "carry the death penalty". Saddam refuses to give name at trial BAGHDAD, Oct 19 (AFP) - Deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on Wednesday defiantly refused to give his name as he went on trial for crimes against humanity and said he did not recognize the court. A bearded Saddam described himself as the "president of Iraq" according to footage broadcast from the courtroom with a delay of about 30 minutes. "I don't acknolwedge either the entity that authorises you nor the aggression because everything based on falsehood is falsehood," Saddam told the chief judge. Hurricane Wilma upgraded to deadly Category 5 WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) Hurricane Wilma, which triggered mudslides that killed up to 10 people in Haiti, has strengthened to an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm as it approaches western Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Militants gun down Afghan official, headmaster KABUL, Oct 19 (Reuters) Suspected Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan killed a district chief and a school headmaster in the volatile southern province of Kandahar, a government spokesman said on Wednesday. The head of Arghandab district was gunned down in a mosque late on Tuesday evening and Haji Abdul Lalai, a headmaster in another district, was shot dead earlier in the day, an interior ministry spokesman said. China declares victory over cross-border drugs ring BEIJING, Oct 19 (Reuters) China has declared victory in a cross-border drugs bust, one of the biggest in Southeast Asia in recent years, arresting 70 suspects and seizing almost 727 kg of heroin, the China Daily said on Wednesday. Chinese police worked with counterparts from Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, the "Golden Triangle" opium growing region, in an 11-month operation that also netted dozens of weapons and millions of dollars of property and currency and culminated with the arrest of an accused kingpin, the paper said.
