Deadly bird flu a risk for Britain, official warns LONDON, Oct 13 (AFP) - The discovery of a strain of avian flu in Turkey that is deadly to humans also shows there is a risk for Britain, the nation's chief veterinary officer warned Thursday. Putin issues shoot-to-kill order for Nalchik: official MOSCOW, Oct 13 (AFP) Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the southern city of Nalchik to be sealed off and issued shoot-to-kill orders for any person who puts up armed resistance to law enforcement personnel there, a senior Russian official said Thursday. The report came after scores of Chechen gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on several Russian government installations in Nalchik, triggering fierce gun battles with security forces that according to officials have left at least 60 people dead.(Posted @ 20:02 PST)

Cricket-Ganguly axed as India captain MOHALI, India, Oct 13 (Reuters) Saurav Ganguly was axed as Indian captain on Thursday while his long-time deputy Rahul Dravid was chosen to lead the side. "We have been holding consultations and we have arrived at a unanimous decision that Rahul Dravid will be the skipper for the Sri Lanka and South Africa series," Indian board secretary Karunakaran Nair told reporters. "There is nothing unusual. Dravid was selected on the basis of his performance. As far as Ganguly is concerned, he has a chance to play in the Duleep Trophy match (Oct.20-23) and also show his fitness on October 17. Blast kills woman bomb carrier in occupied Kashmir SRINAGAR, Oct 13 (AFP) A woman died Thursday when a crude bomb she was carrying exploded in the highway town of Awantipora, 30 kilometres south of Srinagar, a police spokesman said. The woman was travelling to the major highway connecting Srinagar to the city of Jammu to plant the improvised explosive device when it exploded, the spokesman said adding that there were no casualties. However Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed the attack and said a woman suicide bomber from its women’s wing blew up an army vehicle, killing or injuring six Indian soldiers in the first such attack by the group.(Posted @ 18:58 PST)

Playwright Pinter wins Nobel literature prize STOCKHOLM, Oct 13 (Reuters) British playwright Harold Pinter, whose sparse style and use of silences had given rise to the adjective "Pinteresque", was the surprise winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2005 on Thursday. The 75-year-old Londoner was one of Britain's best-known writers for works such as "The Birthday Party" and "The Caretaker". But critics said he was an unexpected pick for the 10 million crown ($1.28 million) prize. Pinter "uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms", said the Swedish Academy. Kuwait holds first camel race with robot jockeys KUWAIT, Oct 13 (Reuters) Kuwait held its first camel race using robots as jockeys on Thursday after children were banned from the sport in response to criticism by rights groups and the United States. Twenty-five Swiss-made robots controlled through remote control devices rode camels on a 10-km trial run on the dusty tracks of the Kuwait Camel Racing Club. "The experiment was highly successful. Fifty gunmen, 12 locals die in Russia attack MOSCOW, Oct 13 (Reuters) Fifty gunmen and 12 local people were killed in a gunbattle in the southern Russian town of Nalchik on Thursday, Itar-Tass news agency quoted Arsen Kanokov, president of the Kabardino-Balkaria region of which Nalchik is capital, as saying. He said a total of 150 gunmen from a militant group took part in the attack on police headquarters and other government buildings. Meanwhile Chechen militants claimed the attack in a statement on a website Thursday. China school shooting leaves 18 wounded BEIJING, Oct 13 (AFP) - A man wielding as many as five homemade handguns opened fire in a primary school in central China's Anhui province, injuring 16 children and two adults, witnesses and state press said Thursday. The man entered the school Wednesday morning and began firing his primitive guns at children doing morning exercises, Xinhua news agency said. He then fled the scene and remains at large. "Nine were lightly injured and seven seriously injured. One student was shot through the lung, some were hit in the head and others in the hands," a teacher said. White House ignored CIA warning of post-war chaos in Iraq: report WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (AFP) - Former CIA intelligence officers have concluded that the White House ignored a CIA assessment warning of major chaos in Iraq after the removal of Saddam Hussein, The New York Times said Thursday. While the review panel acknowledged the CIA's mistaken prewar assessments of Iraq's weapons program, it said "the analysis was right" on cultural and political issues related to postwar Iraq.
