Inter-region under-19 cricket starts from Oct 11

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 1: The Inter-region Under-19 One-day Cricket Championship, starting from Oct 11, will mark the actual start of the 2005-06 cricket season in Pakistan.

Although, two minor events — the inter-zonal under-19 and inter-district senior tournaments — had already been completed, the national under-19 championship provides the first serious competition for the regions taking part.

The under-19 one tournament will be simultaneously staged with the three-day event which gets under way from Oct 13.

A total of Rs600,000 has been allocated for both under-19 events.

With international Test and one-day series to come against England and India, followed by first-ever staging of the Asia Cup in Pakistan, the season does not end until April 20 when the revived Pentagular’s final round matches conclude.

Last season’s three-day tournament was annexed by Lahore who defeated Rawalpindi in the final at the Diamond Club ground in Islamabad. The one-day trophy, however, was shared when the final, also played at the same venue, between Rawalpindi and Sialkot was hit by rain.

This season, the number of teams has been increased from nine to 13 with both Karachi and Lahore fielding two outfits each while Islamabad and Abbottabad are set to make their debut after being granted the regional status by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Previously, Islamabad was used to be considered as part of Rawalpindi region while Abbottabad had affiliations with Peshawar in the past championships.

The teams representing Karachi and Lahore, which used to participate under the nomenclature of Whites and Blues, have been new names by the PCB. Karachi’s teams will play as Karachi Urban and Karachi Harbour while Lahore’s sides have been renamed as Lahore Metro and Lahore Ravi.
