India-Pak agree on glacier pull out, stuck on posts NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - India and Pakistan have agreed to withdraw troops from Siachin’s icy battlefield in the Himalayas but are stuck on verifying each other's positions before they pull back, the Indian defence minister said on Wednesday. "We have agreed, they have agreed to withdraw troops from the present positions. There is no two opinion about it,"Pranab Mukherjee told Reuters in an interview. But Islamabad does not agree to New Delhi's demand that the two militaries mark their positions before demilitarising the Siachen Glacier , he said. At least 51 dead in Nepal landslides KATHMANDU, Sept 28 (AFP) - The death toll from landslides triggered by floods in western Nepal has risen to 51, and rescue workers fear the toll may rise further, police said Wednesday. Pakistani golfers clinch gold in Women Islamic Games ISLAMABAD, Sept 28 (APP): Pakistan won gold medal in golf team event in the ongoing 4th Women Islamic Games at Tehran (Iran), reports available here Wednesday said. Pakistan's Jamila Jabbar earned silver and Tahira Nazir won bronze in individual event of golf. Pakistani girls took their gold medal tally to five as the swimmers hauled up three gold medals, one silver and three bronze. Swimmer Kiran won two gold and Rubab Raza one. Zeenat Perveen had earlier won gold in shotput . Abbas turns to US to defuse Gaza escalation CAIRO, Sept 28 (AFP) - Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas said Wednesday he would travel to Washington to seek US President George W. Bush's help in halting escalating violence between Israel and Palestinian militants. Speaking in Cairo after talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Abbas whose planned summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been postponed amid the unrest -- announced he was due in the United States, although he did not specify when. "The United States is a superpower. Nine dead in suicide attack on Afghan army centre KABUL, Sept 28 (AFP) - A suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up at an army training centre in the Afghan capital on Wednesday, killing nine people and injuring 28, the defence ministry said. The powerful blast ripped through a crowd of soldiers and officials waiting to take buses home from the base on the northern outskirts of Kabul, officials and witnesses said. Defence Ministry spokesman Mohammed Zahir Azimi told AFP that according to initial reports nine people have been killed and 28 wounded. Four of the nine killed are Afghan National Army soldiers and the rest are under investigation, he said adding that the suicide bomber was wearing a military uniform. "Three vehicles were destroyed and the road is closed," he said. India, Pakistan agree on starting Lahore-Amritsar bus service NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (APP): India and Pakistan Wednesday agreed on starting Lahore-Amritsar bus service on regular basis in the second half of November this year.The second round of two-day technical level talks on operationalization of Amritsar-Lahore and Amritsar-Nankana Sahib bus services concluded here with Joint Statement released at a press conference. The two countries discussed draft agreement/protocol and technical modalities for Nankana Sahib-Amritsar bus service including issues such as designated routes, bus terminals and facilities for bus crews, and agreed to hold another round of technical level talks within one month to finalize the arrangements for starting the bus service at the earliest, it added.A trial run of Lahore-Amritsar bus service will take place in the second half of next month with a view to starting regular bus service in the first half of November.Pakistan and India also explored the possibility of travel by pilgrims from both countries to holy shrines in the two countries including Ajmer Sharif.(Posted @ 17:30 PST)

Suicide bomber kills 7 in Iraq BAGHDAD, Sept 28 (Reuters) - At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded when a female suicide bomber attacked a large crowd of people outside an army recruiting centre in the town of Tal Aftar, police said. Gunmen attacked two vehicles belonging to the Jordanian embassy on the Abu Ghraib highway, west of Baghdad, when they were heading to the Jordanian hospital in Falluja.There were no casualties . One policeman was killed by gunmen in northeastern Baghdad when he was heading to work, police said. Men wearing commando uniforms detained six people on Tuesday in the northwestern Huriya district of the capital.They were found shot dead , police said. Indian political delegation to Nepal greeted with stones, protests KATHMANDU, Sept 28 (AFP) - Protestors hurled stones at the vehicle of a seven-member delegation of Indian politicians as they arrived in the Himalayan kingdom Wednesday on a fact-finding mission, witnesses said. As the politicians, representing the ruling Congress party and the Communist Part of India (Marxist) among others arrived at the airport, hundreds of protestors waved black flags, hurled stones at their vehicle and shouted slogans such as "Stop Indian interference in our internal affairs". Egypt proposes nuclear-free-zone in Middle East VIENNA, Sept 28 (AFP) - Egypt said Wednesday it would propose the creation of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East and blasted Israel for standing in the way of such a zone, at a meeting in Vienna of the UN atomic watchdog."Egypt will be tabling a draft resolution on this item, a nuclear-free zone" and hopes for "a serious international commitment in this area," Egyptian ambassador Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy told a general conference of the 139 nations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).The annual IAEA general conference has in past years adopted several such Egyptian-inspired resolutions on a Middle East nuclear-free zone but the resolutions never mention Israel by name.(Posted @ 17:00 PST)

Pakistan nets 42 Indian fishermen KARACHI, Sept 28 (AFP) - Pakistan Tuesday night arrested 42 Indian fishermen and seized their boats for illegal fishing when they were about 50 kilometers (31 miles) inside our sea borders," said Maritime Security Agency spokesman Lt- Commander Ateequr Rehman. Three Nepal soldiers sentenced over custody death of Maoist teenage suspect KATHMANDU, Sept 28 (AFP) - A Nepal military court sentenced a colonel and two captains to six month in jail over the death in custody of a teenage girl accused of being a Maoist guerrilla, an army official said Wednesday. Fifteen-year-old Maina Sunuwar died while being interrogated by the army in 2004. Domestic media reports said she had been subjected to severe torture. Col Bobby Khatri was the highest-ranking army officer to be jailed for human rights abuses. Pakistan arrests most wanted sectarian militant ISLAMABAD, Sept 28 (AFP) Security forces arrested Pakistan's most wanted sectarian militant, Asif Choto, who had allegedly masterminded a string of suicide bombings which killed more than 100 Shiites, officials said Wednesday. Israel launches missile attacks in Gaza; raids Hamas offices GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip Sept 28 (APP/AP) Israeli aircraft unleashed a barrage of missiles at targets in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday and troops fired live artillery shells into the area for the first time, pushing forward with an offensive despite a pledge by militants to halt their recent rocket attacks against Israel. The air strikes knocked out power in Gaza City, plunging most of the city into darkness. Palestinian security officials said the buildings suffered substantial damage, and a bridge in northern Gaza was destroyed, but there were no injuries. In the West Bank, Israeli troops raided offices belonging to Hamas in the towns of Qalqiliya and Tulkarem early Wednesday, Palestinian security officials said.
