No change in Pak position on Israel - President, PM ISLAMABAD, Sept 3 (APP): President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Saturday said there is no change in Pakistan's position on Israel, but it wants to play a positive role for the resolution of the Palestinian dispute based on justice and equality. Pakistan is today in a position to play this role in view of its growing stature in the international community and in the Ummah, the two leaders said during a briefing by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri about his talks with the Israeli Foreign Minister in Istanbul on Wednesday. PML President and Parliamentary leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was also present . President Musharraf reiterated that Pakistan will not recognize Israel until the establishment of an independent Palestinian State. He said that the process of engaging with other faiths is in line with the teachings of Islam. The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) kept the channels of negotiations open with other religions. Foreign Minister Mahmud Kasuri briefing the meeting said he told the Israeli Foreign Minister that Pakistan's gesture was a demonstration that the Islamic world will respond positively if Israel is ready to accept the imperatives of peace by respecting the fundamental rights of the Palestinians to live in freedom and peace in their own homeland and emphasized that Pakistan would like to see that the process started with the withdrawal from Gaza is continued in the West Bank.(Posted @ 20:04 PST)

Hundreds march in Paris for housing for immigrants PARIS, Sept 3 (AFP) - Thousands of protesters demonstrated in central Paris Saturday to demand proper housing for poor African immigrants in the aftermath of two deadly fires in the last nine days. Three dead in car crash involving Lithuania's under-21s BELGRADE, Sept 3 (AFP) - Three people were killed and six were injured when a private vehicle crashed with a bus carrying players of Lithuania's under-21 national team, police said Saturday. Five players and one of the coaches were slightly injured when the bus collided with a car that had crossed onto its side of the road as it drove from the northern town of Novi Sad to the capital, police said. 19 Iraqi police, soldiers die in Baquba attacks BAGHDAD, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Unknown gunmen killed 19 Iraqi police and troops and wounded another 16 in three separate attacks near Baquba, north of Baghdad, on Saturday, police and hospital sources said. The first attack came in the morning at an Iraqi army checkpoint 30 km north of the city when four soldiers died. Later, four police officers were killed by armed gunmen at a checkpoint in the centre of Baquba, while the third attack was on a checkpoint manned jointly by police and soldiers 4 km south of Baquba in which seven police and two soldiers were shot dead. Chirac in hospital with vascular problem PARIS, Sept 3 (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac will be hospitalised for a week with a blood vessel problem that has affected his vision, officials said on Saturday. Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said he spoke to Chirac by telephone and discussed all major government business. He told reporters he believed the eye problems would clear up in a few days. Two rebel commanders among five killed in occupied Kashmir SRINAGAR, Sept 3 (AFP) - Two top members of Hizbul Mujahedin were among five people killed in the latest bout of violence in the revolt-hit region, police said Saturday. Commander Adil Pathan was martyred in Pulwama district Saturday during a pre-dawn clash and another commander, not identified, was martyred during a similar clash in district Udhampur on Saturday, police said. Two Hindus and a Muslim were killed late Friday when suspected militants sprayed them with bullets in village Sourbathi in Doda district, a police spokesman said.One of the slain Hindus was working with counter-insurgency police. Occupied KASHMIR: 7 including major killed SRINAGAR, September 03 (PPI)In occupied Kashmir, seven persons including an Army Major, a troop and a VDC member were killed in separate incidents , reports Kashmir Media Service. A frustrated Havildar Kamal Kumar Giri of 21 Rashtriya Rifles shot dead Major D C Chohan inside an army camp at Baghatpora in Handwara area and then committed suicide. In another incident unidentified gunmen killed a notorious military agent known as Ikhwani at Kachipora-Batapora in Handwara area. Gunmen also shot dead three persons including an Education Department employee at Soundhar in Kishtwara area of Doda district. Restriction on gas supply for power generation to industries lifted: Advisor Karachi, Sep 03 PPI: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Energy Mukhtar Ahmed Saturday said the federal cabinet had lifted restrictions on supply of gas for power generation to the industrial units. Addressing the FPCCI members , he said the government was following multi-pronged approach for development of energy sector as economic development of the country had close relationship with the development of power sector. He said Pakistan had 185 billion tons coal reserves and the government was working aggressively to involve domestic and foreign parties for the mining of coal and power generation in Sindh and in this sector China had also evinced interest. Regarding hydropower generation, he said the potential existed for 41,000 MW but only 6,000 MW was being produced from this source and added that WAPDA recently made a presentation to the Prime Minister on its projects . ANP sees no harm in initiation of talks, contacts with Israel PESHAWAR, Sep 03, (APP): Asfandyar Wali Khan, Senator and Central President of Awami National Party (ANP), has welcomed the initiation of talks between Pakistan and Israel. Addressing a press conference at Press club here Saturday, he said Palestinians themselves were trying to resolve their problems through dialogue with Israel so why should Pakistan lag behind by holding on to dogmatic beliefs. However, he said, the government should take parliament into confidence if it plans to manoeuvre its foreign policy regarding Israel. Replying to a question he said his party’s alliance with Jummat-e-Islami was merely on the local level and not on ideological level and cited the example of similar alliances formed between two parties in various situations in the past. India vows to push on with Iranian gas pipeline TEHRAN, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Energy-hungry India said on Saturday it would push on with plans to build a $7 billion gas pipeline from Iran, undaunted by the increasing threat of United Nations sanctions against Tehran. When asked what effect such political pressures could have on the pipeline project, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters: "We have an interest in taking it forward, India needs gas." Sarna was speaking during a visit by Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh to Tehran. Syrian security forces kill five militants in clash DAMASCUS, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Syrian security forces have killed five militants in a clash in central Syria with an Islamist group plotting "terrorist" attacks, the official SANA news agency said on Saturday."The anti-terror squad raided on Friday evening a hideout of a terrorist group belonging to Jund al-Sham in the Hama governorate," it said, quoting an Interior Ministry source. "A clash took place and resulted in the killing of all five members of the group," while two Syrian security officers were wounded, it said. Government seeks Muslim help to improve US image WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (AFP) - In order to improve America's image abroad Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Karen Hughes arrived Friday in Rosemont, Illinois, where she met with top US Muslim leaders attending the 42nd annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America, the umbrella group for dozens of mosques and other Muslim associations in the United States and Canada. An estimated 40,000 people are attending its four-day convention. "I found new allies to help me do my job," Hughes declared after the talks. The Islamic society had sent an invitation to Bush, saying his visit would go a long way toward demonstrating that the United States respected Islam. The convention set up a Hurricane Katrina relief fund and urged Muslim Americans to assist the victims of the floods caused by the monster storm that hit Louisiana and Mississippi. Taliban claim killing parliamentary candidate, district governor KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept 3 (AFP) - The Taliban Saturday claimed they had executed five people, including a candidate in the upcoming polls and a district governor. Earlier, Afghan officials said candidate Mohammed Yaqoob and Ghorak district governor Haji Mohammed Nawab were abducted along with three police guards from a road 90 kilometers northwest of Kandahar on Friday.Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi said militants had killed the five men. India's lawless Bihar state to hold elections next month NEW DELHI, Sept 3 (AFP) - India's lawless Bihar state will hold elections in October, eight months after a hung assembly led to the ouster of Laloo Prasad Yadav's party after 15 years in power, election officials said Saturday. Shortly after the last election in February, Bihar was placed under governor rule as political parties failed to build coalitions for a majority in the 243-seat assembly. Yadav, now India's Railways Minister, had appointed his wife as Bihar's chief minister after he was charged with corruption in an animal feed deal. Two Japanese tourists confirmed dead in Afghanistan KABUL, Sept 3 (AFP) - Two missing Japanese tourists were confirmed dead in Afghanistan Saturday after doctors matched their dental records with those of two bodies found earlier this week, officials said."In the three-and-half-hour examination we found that the dental examinations matched the dental records provided to us by the Japanese embassy of the two missing Japanese," said Dr Ehsanullah Alimi, director of the medical jurisprudence hospital in Kabul. "These two bodies belong to the two Japanese citizens who were missing," he told reporters in Kabul at the police-run hospital where the autopsies were carried out. The pair had both been shot, Alimi said. Hasegawa suffered a bullet wound to the right temple and Fukusho was shot through the top of his head. Mohammed Omar Adi, the deputy chief of the hospital, said the pair had been "killed over three weeks ago". The bodies were found late Thursday dumped in the desert near the Spin Boldak highway, which links the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar with the Pakistani border town of Chaman, where the couple had crossed into Afghanistan on August 8. Media reports in Tokyo have said the teachers apparently set out on their own in a taxi to see the remains of the Bamiyan Buddhas, a set of huge 1,500-year-old structures dynamited by the hardline Taliban regime in 2001. Egypt identifies Sharm el-Sheikh bombers CAIRO, Sept 3 (Reuters) Egyptian security have identified through DNA testing the three suicide bombers behind the attack on the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in July that killed at least 64 people, the semi-official Al-Ahram newspaper reported. The newspaper, which did not give a source for its report, said the bombers who attacked Sharm el-Sheikh on July 23 were Mahmoud Mohamed Hammad, Mohamed Oudeh Saeed and Moussa Ghoneim. Explosion, fire on Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline KIRKUK, Iraq, Sept 3 (Reuters) A major Iraqi crude oil pipeline was hit by an explosion on Saturday and was on fire, a guard on the pipeline said. The pipeline runs from the major northern Iraqi oilfield of Kirkuk to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. The Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline consists of two parallel pipes, one with a nominal capacity of 1.1 million barrels per day while the other with a capacity of 500,000 bpd. (Posted @ 12:45 PST)

China says committed to peace but warns Taiwan BEIJING, Sept 3 (Reuters) China marked the 60th anniversary of Japan's World War Two defeat on Saturday with a reassurance that it was committed to peace, but warned self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, against declaring statehood. The warning came two days before President Hu Jintao leaves for a thee-day visit to the United States, during which he’s expected to seek to play down perceived economic and military threats posed by an emerging China.
