Sonia will appear before probe team
FAISALABAD, Sept 1: Sonia Naz, who has brought two policemen in the dock on the allegation of raping and torturing her, has expressed willingness to appear before the investigation team for recording her statement.
Sources told Dawn on Thursday that Sonia had contacted the inquiry team head, DIG Zafar Ahmad Qureshi, on his cell phone and assured him of her appearance for recording the statement.
She informed the DIG about her claim of rape and other misdeeds committed by SP (Investigation) Abdullah Khalid and Inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti, the Sargodha Road police station SHO.
SP Abdullah and Inspector Jamshed have already been suspended from service and are facing high-level inquiries.
Sonia claimed that she was abducted by a police team, led by Inspector Jamshed, who raped her in the presence of Abdullah at some unknown place. She levelled some other serious allegations against the policemen and promised her appearance for recording statement on Friday or Saturday.
She demanded the inquiry team head that the police should provide her security during her visit to Faisalabad for the purpose.
DIG Zafar Ahmad confirmed his contact with the victim who, he said, would be provided a conducive environment for recording her version and substantiating her claims.
STATEMENTS: The statements of police officials the inquiry team recorded on Thursday revealed that Sonia’s husband Asim Yousaf was in police custody for about a month and was interrogated by a special team, headed by SP Abdullah.
Sources close to the investigation team of Range Crimes DIG Zafar Ahmad Qureshi and SSP (Investigation) Saadullah Bharwana told Dawn that eight police officials, including Abdullah, Jamshed Iqbal and Inspector Muhammad Abid Pehalwan of the People’s Colony Police, recorded statements and revealed some facts about the motor registration scandal.
Accused SP Abdullah denied raping Sonia, confining her and husband Asim and several other relatives after implicating them, and receiving illegal gratification.
He claimed that the story had been concocted by Sonia at the behest of a mafia operating against him. He claimed that he had an unblemished career record and had rendered meritorious services in detecting heinous crimes.
