KARACHI, Sept 1: A man with the help of his friend killed his nephew and dumped his body in a storm-water drain in North Nazimabad. Waqas Ahmed, 9, son of Qutubuddin, a resident of Khandu Goth in North Nazimabad police limits, went missing on Aug 5. His parents searched him, but to no avail.

Allah Ditta, the maternal uncle of Wagas, who came from Rahimyar Khan with his friend Jahangir in search of a job, stayed at the house of Qutubuddin, and received Rs25,000 for searching Waqas in Rahimyar Khan.

Later, Allah Datta informed Qutubuddin that he and Jahangir have searched for Waqas but did not find him in Rahimyar Khan, and demanded more money to continue the search. However, the father of the victim suspected some foulplay, and informed the police.

The police later picked up Allah Datta and Jahangir for interrogation, who confessed to have kidnapped and killed Waqas.

They said they confined the child to a vacant under-construction house and gave him sleeping pills. As the child fell unconscious, they strangled him and dumped his body in the storm-water drain near Dr Ziauddin Hospital.

DSP Investigation Kunwar Asif said the police had been looking for the body in the drain, but it could not be found. The search would be launched again on Friday, he said, adding after the recovery of the body, the suspected killers would be formally arrested.

ROBBERY: An employee of Dawn was robbed of cash and belongings near Shaheen Complex. He was also beaten up by robbers when he put up resistance.

Mohabbat Khan, a driver of Dawn, was coming to office on foot when he was intercepted by unidentified persons. He put up resistance to robbers who not only looted cash and belongings but also beat him up severely. The robbers later fled.

Mohabbat Khan, who is an elderly man, fell unconscious, and was shifted to a local hospital. This is the second incident over the past two weeks in which Dawn staffers have been robbed in the neighbourhood of the Artillery Maidan police station, where the office of the Saddar town police officer, the DIG Operations and police quarters are also located.

Earlier, the staff reporter, Bahzad Alam Khan, was also robbed near Hindu Gymkhana.

Investigators suspect that youths living in the nearby police quarters might be involved in increasing robberies and thefts in the locality.
