KARACHI: Two kidnappers awarded life: Bike-snatcher sentenced

KARACHI, Sept 1: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Thursday two men to life in jail for kidnapping a nine-year-old boy for ransom. Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 also ordered the confiscation of the accused persons’ properties worth Rs100,000 each.

Mohammad Sheraz and Iqbal kidnapped Anis Ahmed as he came out of his school in Gulberg on April 6.

The accused demanded Rs200,000 and 2.5 kg gold from the victim’s father, Nasfis Ahmed, a goldsmith, and received Rs70,000 and a gold biscuit for his release.

The victim boy on his return led the police to the house where he was kept. The house belonged to a woman, Safia Bibi, who was a maid at a school.

The two accused were working at a factory where Safia’s brother-in-law, Saeed Ullah, was also employed.

The woman was not present in her house when the two accused brought the victim boy and kept him there for some hours before they received the ransom. However, Safia’s seven-year-old son, Mujeebur Rehman, was present in the house.

Special public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa examined in all eight prosecution witnesses, including victim Anis and Mujeebur Rehman, who both identified the two accused in the court.

The Gulberg police arrested the two accused at midnight on April 8 when they were having burgers at a roadside vendor’s in front of the Babul Khair moque in Gulberg. The police also seized Rs45,000 and the gold bar from them at the time of arrest.

CONVICTED: The judicial magistrate, Central, Lubna Yousuf, sentenced a motorbike snatcher to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 16 months.

The magistrate also imposed a fine of Rs5,000 on convict Sufiyan, who would have to undergo an additional 45-day imprisonment in case of default on the payment.

The accused was found guilty of having snatched the motorcycle from complainant Syed Ali on Feb 22 last year in the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police limits.
