NED lift trophy in exciting finish


KARACHI, Aug 28: NED University clinched the PCB Inter-university cricket championship two-day Southern Zone final in a thrilling fashion, beating Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro (MEUTJ) by one wicket at National Stadium on Sunday.

Set 118 in 30 overs, NED University reached the target with four balls to spare with Asad Ali making 26 and Fazal Mohammad Khan striking 25 off 22 balls with five boundaries. Sami Khan slammed three boundaries in his 23.

NED, resuming at 98 for three, reached 254 for six in the allotted 51 overs of the first innings. Syed Raheel top-scored with 69 off 79 balls with six boundaries and Asad Ali cracked 50 off 54 deliveries with the aid of six hits to the ropes.

MUETJ were restricted to 182 for eight in their second innings’ quota of 30 overs.

Faraz Ahmed, who took seven wickets for 47 runs in the match, scored 20 not out in the first and an unbeaten 12 in the second innings and was named man of the match.

Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Shaharyar M. Khan, who was chief guest at the final, said the objective of conducting the Inter-university contest from PCB platform was to raise the standard of the game and create competitiveness at this level.

MUETJ 189-9 in 51 overs (Mohammad Shafiq 57, Babar Shaikh 55 not out, Faraz Ahmed Khan 3-46) and 182-8 in 30 overs (Abdul Quddus 43, Mohammad Shariq 40, Babar Shaikh 38; Faraz Ahmed Khan 4-33); NED 254-6 in 51 overs (Syed Raheel 69, Asad Ali 50, Amanullah 33; Babar Shaikh 2-48, Farhan Khan 2-44) and 121-9 in 29.2 overs (Asad Ali 26, Fazal Mohammad Khan 25, Sami Khan 23, Faraz Ahmed Khan 12 not out, Babar Shaikh 3-25, Abdul Samad 2-16, Farhan Khan 2-16).—APP
