KARACHI: KU may allow students to invite politicians: Students week
KARACHI, Aug 27: The University of Karachi is considering allowing students to invite political leaders, provincial ministers and other dignitaries at the university campus during the students’ week being held in the second week of September.
A university official told newsmen on Saturday that several proposals to organize the students’ week in a befitting and peaceful manner, including holding of recreational activities for students by the Students’ Advisor office, were being reviewed by the university administration.
He, however, said that a majority of the administrative staff and faculty members were in favour of allowing students to arrange their activities themselves at departmental and faculty levels, besides permitting them to invite political personalities, provincial ministers and advisors and other notables in their functions.
According to him, security was the major concern for the administration as often activities of students groups have resulted in skirmishes on the campus in the past. Often difference of opinion or ideology led them to ruin others’ functions.
“In spite of this, students may be allowed to their activities at scattered places within the varsity campus, amid tight security, while shuttle service would be available for the convenience of the students.”
He said that no outsider would be allowed to enter the campus during the Students’ Week.
He maintained that a final decision regarding the exact date for holding of the week would be finalized by the KU VC, Dr Pirzada Qasim, but most probably, it would be held in second week of September next. — PPI
