ISLAMABAD, Aug 26: Textile sector export registered a growth of 3.95 per cent in July and stood at $788.309 million as against $758.370 million during the same month last year.
The other three important sectors of the economy — engineering, pharmaceutical and leather tanned — recorded a decline during the first month of the current fiscal year, according to official figures released here on Friday by Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS).
However, the growth of textile products during the first six months (January-June 2005) was 11.38 per cent. While the over all growth in 2004-05 in textile sector remained at 6.58 per cent.
Product wise detail showed that export of knitwear declined by 20.29 per cent, towels by 14.89 per cent, tents, canvas and tarpaulin by 54.60 per cent and art, silk and synthetic textile by 24.64 per cent in July 2005.
While the export of cotton yarn increased by 25.30 per cent, cotton cloth 34.20 per cent, bed-wear 5.89 per cent, readymade garments 4.41 per cent and made up articles 0.68 per cent during the month under review.
Further analysis showed that export of engineering goods declined by 48.24 per cent in July 2005 over the same month of last year. Of these, export of electric fans declined by 21.24 per cent, auto parts 33.26 per cent, machinery specialised for particular industries 53.16 per cent.
The export of leather tanned declined by 21.97 per cent in July 2005. However, export of leather manufactures recorded a nominal growth of 8.37 per cent during the month under review.
Export of surgical goods and medical instrument registered a growth of 49.56 per cent, footwear 103.58 per cent, cutlery 27.87 per cent, sports goods 46.41 per cent during July.
The export of primary commodities has registered a growth of 20.13 per cent during July 2005. Of these, export of rice increased by 40.23 per cent, raw cotton 94.86 per cent, fish and fish preparation 175.95 per cent.
The export of gems declined by 63.43 per cent, jewellery 89.56 per cent, furniture 60.70 per cent, petroleum products 72.63 per cent, carpets 29.84 per cent and molasses by 33.14 per cent during the month under review.
The total value of exports in July 2005 increased by 7.45 per cent to $1.272 billion as against $1.183 billion during the same month last year.
