KARACHI: ST worker shot dead

KARACHI, Aug 22: An activist of the Sunni Tehreek was shot dead by unknown persons in Garden area on Monday night, while four persons, including two children, suffered bullet injuries in a drive-by shooting incident in Nanikwara after a couple of hours.

Police said ST activist Mohammad Ali, 30, was shot at by unknown persons when he was coming out from a mosque after offering Maghreb prayers in Islampura. He was rushed to Civil Hospital from where he was taken to JPMC.

However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at JPMC. Hospital sources said that the victim had suffered six bullet wounds. Mohammad Ali was a sector chief of the ST in Usmanabad, police said.

Following the attack on ST activist, four persons Mohammad Moosa, 5, Shahzad, 9, Anas, 18 and Mohammad Ishaq, 21, sustained bullet wounds in shooting from a car in Nanikwara, police said.

Following the two incidents, tension griped the old city areas. A heavy police reinforcement reached the troubled areas following the two incidents.

In Moosa Lane, Lyari, a shopkeeper was shot dead while his brother and an employee sustained injuries when unknown persons on a motorcycle opened fire on them on Monday morning.

Police said Saleem, 25, and his brother Sikandar, were sitting at their sweetmeat shop in Moosa Lane when three suspects on a motorcycle pulled up and sprayed them with bullets.

They were rushed to the Civil Hospital where Saleem was pronounced dead on arrival while Sikandar and their employee were provided treatment.

TPO Lyari Omar Shahid Saleem said that the man was not an activist, but belonged to the Ahle Hadis.

Police said enraged people, accompanying the injured, ransacked the emergency ward of the CHK and misbehaved with doctors and paramedics.

On Monday evening, family and friends of the deceased, Saleem, brought his body at Merewether Tower to lodge their protest against the killing.

They blocked traffic for about half an-hour in the peak evening rush hour.

Senior police officials reached the spot and negotiated with the protesting people.

TPO Lyari told Dawn that Monday’s killing bears resemblance with the Aug 13 killing of Maulana Naqashbandi.
