Hameed retains ITF Srs title

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20: Pakistan’s former Davis Cup star Hameedul Haq on Saturday retained his 40 and over crown in the ITF Asian seniors championship in Pattaya, Thailand. The second seeded Hameed’s opponent was India’s unseeded R. Nagraj whom he thrashed 6-0, 6-0 in a woefully one-sided final of the championship that is held every year.

A delighted Hameed told Dawn on phone from Pattaya that he had not expected that the decider would unfold in a manner it did.

“I thought that the match would be tough but I was surprised that Nagraj did not put up a fight at all.”

It was Hameed’s 150th career title. Hameed’s trip was eventually sponsored by the newly-created Pakistan Sports Trust which willingly stepped forward to dole out enough cash for his travel and other expenses.
