ZURICH, Aug 20: Russian Tatyana Lebedeva was the only athlete to remain in contention for the $1 million Golden League jackpot after winning the triple jump at the Weltklasse meeting on Friday. American Justin Gatlin was among a host of newly-crowned world champions to triumph in Zurich, surging to victory in the 100 metres.
Lebedeva returned to winning ways after being forced to pull out of the world championships in Helsinki earlier this month due to an Achilles injury. The 29-year-old cleared 14.94 metres on her fifth jump, pushing world champion Trecia Smith of Jamaica into second place on 14.67.
Lebedeva must now win in Brussels and Berlin to claim the jackpot awarded to any athlete who wins in a single discipline at all six of the season’s Golden League meetings.
Despite making the slowest start, double Helsinki gold medallist Gatlin drove past his rivals to win the men’s 100 metres in 10.14 seconds. Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu was second in 10.22.
Of the 13 world champions competing in their gold medal disciplines, eight were successful including American 400 metres hurdler Jeremy Wariner, 3,000 metres steeplechaser Saif Saaeed Shaheen of Qatar and women’s 800 metres champion Zulia Calatayud of Cuba.
There was disappointment though for American Lauryn Williams in the 100 metres, 400 metres world champion Tonique Darling-Williams and French 110 metres hurdler Ladji Doucoure.
In a scene reminiscent of her Helsinki win, Williams embarked on a victory lap after seeming to get the better of Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell.
But she was brought back to earth after the clock showed her 0.03 seconds off Campbell’s winning time of 10.85 seconds.
