Nomi lifts title, triple crown for Mushtaq


KARACHI, Aug 20: Davis Cupper Nomi Qamar outplayed second seed Jalil Khan in a three-setter to win the men’s singles title of the Sindh Open ranking tennis tournament at the Karachi Gymkhana on Friday.

The top seeded Nomi, a Pakistan number three, took 70 minutes and dropped a set before recording 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the final.

Nomi played some superb back-handed strokes to take the opening set in less than 15 minutes 6-1.

But Jalil, also a former Pakistan Davis Cup player and younger brother of national champion Aqeel Khan, bounced back to take the next set 6-3. Nomi then regained control of the proceedings and prevailed over Jalil 6-3 in the final set to claim the title.

Earlier, local youngster Nasir Mushtaq won his third title of the tournament when he thrashed Rizwan Hussain 6-0, 6-1 to win the juniors (under-17) title. Nasir, the reigning Pakistan No. 1 in the under-15 category, won the boys’ under-15 event by beating Jahangir Rashid 6-4, 6-4.

Nasir also won the boys’ under-15 event when he teamed up with Ghulam Abbas to beat Ibrahim Khalid and Abdul Rahman 6-2, 6-1.

Omer Shahid captured the boys’ under-13 crown when he outgunned Mustafa Zaidi 7-5, 6-1while Adil Kohari got the better of Nameer Shamsi in the final of the boys’ under-11.

Khwaja Nawaz defeated Taha Bnadeali 6-1, 6-2 to claim the boys’ under-9 title.

Iman Malik claimed a double crown when she won both the ladies singles and girls’ under-17 singles titles. She defeated Anam Saeed 6-0, 6-2 in the final of the ladies’ singles and blanked Samar Essa 6-0, 6-0 in the girls’ under-17 final.

Jalil Khan and Asif Raja defeated Nomi Qamar and Asad Ali Bhagat to win the men’s doubles crown.
