Independents outdo parties in Kohat

KOHAT, Aug 19: Of the 64 nazims and naib nazims elected in the district, 10 belong to the Jamiat Ulema–i-Islam, six each to the Awami National Party and the Jamaat-i-Islami, four to the Pakistan People’s Party (Sherpao), three to the Pakistan Muslim League and one to the PML (Nawaz), while the rest are independents.

In a major upset, Pir Dilawar Shah defeated his two strong rivals, including the former nazim, in Jangle Khel urban-III union council.

According to results obtained by Dawn on Friday, five former nazims have retained their posts. They are: Syed Mahtabul Hassan from Ustarzai union council, Mir Zaman Shinwari from Kohat urban-III, Habibur Rehman from Bahadar Kot, Fawad Khan from Lachi urban and Arif from Nasrat Khel. Women were not allowed to take part in the election in Tappi union council.

In Kohat city urban-I, Hussain Ahmed and Asghar Ayub have been elected nazim and naib nazim, respectively, with 2,881 votes; in Shahpur, Mohammad Iqbal and Fayyaz with 2,701 votes; in Surgul, Gulzar Khan and Abdul Manan with 1,904 votes; in Jarma, Tehseen Ahmed and Noormat Khan with 1,319 votes; in Kharmatu, Ahmed Shuja and Ishtiaq with 1,783 votes; in Shiekh Allah Dad, Noorul Haq and Mahmoodur Rehman with 1,305 votes; in Cholakki, Misbahuddin and Zardad Ali with 1,460 votes; in Khushlgarh, Mohammad Farooq and Zakirullah Khan with 1,962 votes; in Lachi urban, Fawad Khan and Mohammad Saeed with 1,596 votes; in Lachi rural, Shabbirur Rehman and Samar Gul with 808 votes, in Sherkot, Shabbir Hussain and Nadir Ali with 994 votes; in Ustarzai, Mahtabul Hassan and Mohammad Ismail with 3,424 votes; in Alizai, Iftikhar Hussain and Manzoor Hussain with 1,101 votes; in Nasrat Khel, Arif and Roshan Gul with the final results awaited; in Mandoori, Abdul Rashid and Matiur Rehman with 808 votes; in Sudal, Hayat Khan and Munawar Khan with the final result awaited; in Bilitang, Misbahuddin and Ahmed Jan with 1,885 votes; in Gumbat, Shakeel Haider and Mausam Khan with 3,086 votes; in Shakardarra urban, Riazur Rehman and Zikria Khan with 1,312 votes, in Shakaradrra rural-I, Abdur Rehman and Gul Rehman with 1,477 votes; in Shakardarra rural-II, Lachi Khan and Roshan Badshah with 1,641 votes; in Mohammadzai, Noor Mohammad Bangash and Jabeel Khan unopposed; in Dhodha, Umar Khan and Khan Mohammad with 1,579 votes; in Sumari, Pir Sabir and Sahibur Rehman with 913 votes; in Kohat urban-II, Mohammad Saleem and Burhanuddin with 1,890 votes; in Kohat urban-II, Mir Zaman and Iftikhar with 1,146 votes; in Kohat urban-IV, Dilawar Shah and Shafi Durrani with 1,166 votes; in Kohat urban-VI, Shakoor and Mohammad Farooq with 776 votes; in Bhadar Kot, Habibur Rehman and Zakirullah Khan with 1,962 votes; in Togh Bala-I, Bashir and Abdul Aziz with 982 votes and in Togh Bala-II, Bakhtiar and Habibullah with 1,305 votes.

The results were coming at a very slow pace because the polling staff was not properly trained, which created hurdles in the compilation of data at the initial stages.

Election Commission officials, when contacted, said the official results would be announced on Saturday.

They said they had not received any results yet from the district returning officer.
