Bogus voting alleged

PESHAWAR, Aug 19: A defeated candidate on Friday accused his rival of organizing bogus votes in his favour and asked the Election Commission to nullify the result and order re-election.

He was contesting for the slot of Surezai Union Council nazim in the local polls.

Addressing a news conference, Jan Afzal alleged that the polling staff helped his rival’s supporters in casting bogus votes.

In Mamakhel polling station, he said, six polling booths had been established instead of the two approved, and his agent had not been allowed to enter the booth.

“We lodged several complaints with the presiding officer to suspend polling, but to no avail,” he said.

The officer had neither suspended the polling nor taken action against bogus voting, he said.

Police, he alleged, had arrested the brother and a supporter of the rival candidate, but later released the brother and kept the other in custody.

Presiding Officer Munif Khan had congratulated the rival even before the start of vote count, he said, adding that it was a clear proof of his involvement in the bogus voting.
