KOLKATA, Aug 18: Police in eastern India were interrogating on Thursday two men arrested for handing out leaflets and soliciting funds for a group which had Al Qaeda in its name, a senior officer said.

The Urdu-language leaflets distributed in two Muslim areas of Kolkata said money raised would be used by mujahideen to fight ‘for the cause of Muslims across the world’.

“The two men were arrested for distributing bunches of leaflets and coupons among some shop owners early this week in the eastern fringes of the city,” police said.

A court had remanded the men in police custody, and “they are being interrogated”, Mukherjee said.

Shop owners in the Muslim-dominated Tiljala and Tapsia districts were asking customers to pay five rupees for each coupon which carried the name of ‘Mujahideen Al Qaeda Pacific International’.—AFP
