Pakistani forces kill suspected militant in madrassa shoot-out PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug 17 (AFP) Pakistani forces killed a suspected militant and arrested seven others after raiding a madrassa (seminary) in a remote tribal district near the Afghan border, the military said Wednesday. A military statement did not disclose the nationality of the arrested foreigner or give details about which group the suspected militants belonged to. A large cache of arms, ammunition, explosives and documents were seized from the madrassa, near North Waziristan's main town of Miranshah, which had now been sealed off. World Bank raises Pakistan aid after economic progress ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (Reuters) World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz on Wednesday expressed confidence in Pakistan's economic progress in recent years and said the bank's assistance to the country would rise to $1.5 billion this financial year. The Bank approved $950 million of new assistance in fiscal 2004/05, which ended in June. "In my view, there is no question the glass here is half-full and is filling up," he said. Israeli gunman kills three Palestinians in West Bank JERUSALEM, Aug 17 (Reuters) An Israeli gunman killed three Palestinians in the West Bank on Wednesday, Israeli medical officials said, in an attack that could complicate Israel's evacuation of Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip. A police spokesman said the attacker, identified in the Israeli media as a Jewish settler from the West Bank, was arrested. Ecuadoran boat sinks off Colombia killing 104 QUITO, Aug 17 (AFP) - One-hundred-four people drowned when an Ecuadoran boat carrying suspected illegal migrants sank in the Pacific off Colombia, a port spokesman said Wednesday. A fishing boat reported rescuing nine people, seven men and two women, found clinging to a crate and buoys in waters off Colombia on Sunday, said Armando Elizalde, captain of the Ecuadoran port of Manta. Post-flood Bombay disease death toll at least 195 MUMBAI, Aug 17 (Reuters) The death toll from disease in Mumbai and adjacent areas, after the worst floods in history in the western Indian state of Maharashtra three weeks ago, has risen to at least 195, officials said on Wednesday. Blasts rock Bangladesh cities; one dead, 100 hurt DHAKA, Aug 17 (Reuters) Scores of mysterious bomb blasts, many of them targeting government buildings, rocked cities across Bangladesh on Wednesday, killing one person, wounding at least 100 and triggering panic. State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babr said the blasts appeared to be "pre-planned and well organised" but he did not blame any individual or group. Roughly 200 homemade bombs exploded on the streets, at courts and near key government buildings in various places across Bangladesh between 0500 and 0530 GMT, police and witnesses said. Leaked documents allege London police error in Brazilian's death LONDON, Aug 17 (AFP) Police in London were under pressure Wednesday after leaked documents revealed that a Brazilian killed on suspicion of being a suicide bomber was not trying to evade police and was already being restrained when he was shot at point-blank range. Baghdad morgue receives 1,100 dead in July: British newspaper LONDON, Aug 17 (APP/AFP) The number of dead Iraqi civilians counted at the Baghdad morgue hit 1,100 in July, the highest toll in recent history, a British newspaper reported on Wednesday, blaming the daily violence.The Independent said the figure was just 700 short of the total number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since April 2003, following the US-led invasion. "The July figures are the largest ever recorded in the history of the Baghdad Medical Institute," an anonymous, senior member of the management at the morgue was quoted as telling the newspaper.
