KARACHI, Aug 13: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has criticized the CBR for rescinding 103 duty drawback notification through SRO 782 and 783 of 2005, without giving a cut-off date to exporters.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, KCCI Export Sub-Committee Chairman Muhammad Iqbal Mangrani said: “It has been a practice of the government to give a 90-day cut-off period if a drawback notification was to be rescinded.”

He demanded that in order to safeguard the interest of exporters and keep them away from hassles as well as financial losses, a cut-off period of at least 90 days should have been allowed before the implementation of SRO 782 and 783.

Mr Mangrani pointed out that under the WTO quota-free regime, textile exporters were facing a fierce competition from China and India, and added that the implementation of such SROs, without giving any grace period to the exporters, will hamper the export business.

He suggested that the government should give some time so that the exporters could adjust to the new rules prior to facing new SROs.
